BY BLOOD - the maze runner

CHAPTER FIVE

In the morning Katherine and Newt went towards the entrance with Minho and Alby. The doors were already open. " Be careful you two okay?" Newt said to the two. " We don't want a new leader do we?" Katherine smirked at Alby. " Don't worry, we'll be back in no time" Alby assured them. " We need to go," Minho said to Alby. " Be careful" Katherine said, hugged Alby, and patted Minho's chest. Newt and Katherine watched as the two ran inside the maze. Katherine let out a breath she was holding. " They're gonna be fine" Newt smiled at the girl. " I hope so" Katherine bit her lips.

Later that day, when Katherine didn't have anything to do she decided to spend time with Newt. It wasn't a big idea, since Thomas was bombarding the poor British boy with questions. " Alright, but why would Alby go in the maze? I mean, he's not a He's not a runner" Thomas asked Newt. He was sitting on a log, Chuck was next to him, carving something on a wood and Katherine was sitting on the ground, leaning on the log with her back. " Things are different now. Alby went to retrace Ben's footsteps before sundown. Look are you gonna help?" Newt told the boy. Newt and Zart were removing a log from the ground. " So he's gonna go back to where Ben was just stung?" Thomas asked. " Alby knows what he's doing, alright?" Katherine answered before Newt could with a small glare send Thomas's way. " He knows better then any of us" Newt gave a small look to Katherine. " What does that mean?" Thomas asked another question, making Katherine sigh. " Alright, it's like you've heard, yeah? Every month, the box sends up a new arrival. But someone had to be first, right? Someone had to spend a whole month in the Glade alone. And that was Alby" Newt said while waving his machete around. " I mean, it can't have been easy. But when those other boys started coming up, one after the other, he saw the truth. And he learned that the most important thing is that we all have each other. Because we're all in this together" Newt explained to Thomas. " Well... me and Rick came together.. But that's not the point" Katherine fake caughed and Newt send he a small grin. After that, Thomas joined Newt and Zart and started to hit the ground around the roots of the log. " Yeah. There you go, greenie" Newt said with a smile when Thomas joined them. Katherine looked up when she heard a thunder and saw black clouds, making her frown.

It was raining and everyone was hiding under the roof and they watched the entrance to the maze. " They should be back by now. What happens if they don't make it?" Thomas asked, he needed to speak louder because of the rain. " They're gonna make it" Newt said, reasuring him, but it was more to reasure himself. He kept his hand on Katherine's shoulder, seeing that she was nervous. " And what happens if they don't?" Thomas asked and walked closer to Newt. " They're gonna make it" Katherine repeated Newt's words, placing her hand on Newt's hand that was on her shoulder. 

After it stopped raining, few gladers were standing in front of the entrance to the maze, waiting for Minho and Alby. Katherine and Rick were in the front, holding each others hands for comfort. Everyone was worried. And the worrying was worse when they heard the rumbling of the walls. " Come on guys, can't we send someone after them?" Thomas asked anxiosly. " That's against the rules. Either they make it  back or they don't" Gally told Thomas, Katherine hated how he sounded calm, but she knew he was right. " Can't risk loosing anyone else" Newt explained to Thomas. The wind started to pick up and Katherine's breath started to be quicker. Rick picked up on that and squeezed her hand. " There!" Thomas pointed when he saw Minho at the end of the hall. But something was of. " Wait no, there's somethings wrong" Newt noticed. Minho was dragging unconcius Alby on his back. " Come on Minho you can do it!" Chuck shouted. " Minho! Please come back!" Katherine shouted with tears in her eyes, and everyone else started to shout too. " They're not gonna make it" Newt said. And then, right before the doors closed, Thomas ran in. " Thomas no!" Rick shouted and wanted to go after him, but Frypan stopped him. Then the doors closed and Katherine froze. She ignored that the only one's there were only her, Newt, Rick, Frypan, Chuck and Gally. Her world crumbled. Her heart broke into million pieces thinking that her best friend was going to die, that her leader was going to die and that the boy that started to grow on her was going to die. She let out a small sob as tears started to run down her face and she felt hands around her. She knew it was Newt, she always knew. She wrapped her arms around his waist and burried her face into the crook of his neck. She didn't want to believe that she lost the boy she cared about deeply.
