‘I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful …’ Psalm 139:13-14 NIV

In order for you to thrive and have self-worth, you must understand four things:

1) How God feels about you. The psalmist says, ‘Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good. His love endures forever’ (Psalm 136:1 NIV). Knowing this is foundational to your spiritual development and to your relationship with God.

2) How your family feel about you. Sadly, some people don’t realise how deeply their family loves them, and they look for approval from the wrong people. Life gets messy, especially if you’re living in a blended family. Find a grandparent, aunt, or uncle with whom you feel comfortable sharing your thoughts.

3) How you feel about yourself. The most painful aspect of growing up is related to the assault on self-esteem that’s almost universal with today’s youth. Young people can be made to feel like fools and failures before they even have a chance to get started in life. Remind yourself that you are a ‘work in progress’ with incredible potential. ‘I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful …’ (Psalm 139:13-14 NIV). Take time to discover your God-given gifts and develop them. Do you love electronics, art, music, or even raising chickens for fun and profit. Anything! The key is to learn something to compensate for when the whole world seems to be saying, ‘Who are you, and what is your significance?’

4) How your peers feel about you. If they approve, that’s good. But if they don’t, and you have got the first three things right, you will still thrive.
