"asher have you seen my tie?", i hear my brother august ask from the next room. i am currently trying to get ready for my last day of school ever but in this household you have not a second of peace.
"why would i know where you left your stupid tie? it's like i'm the only one with a brain here.." i now hear the answer. rolling my eyes at my brothers i step out of my door, wearing the all too familiar red uniform of the academy. while walking down the stairs of our penthouse, i check if i got everything i need on me right now. i do.

my mother is already sitting in our formal dining room with freshly made breakfasts in front of her. her flaming red hair is still put up in her curlers and she is wearing her light green dressing gown. when i sit down and grab a slice of bread and some cheese she asks me:
"are you ready for your last day sweetheart? i know how excited you are to go out into this big world, but always be sure that we love you no matter what. your father and i will alway have a spare bedroom just for you!"
"yes mother, i know that.." i say while rolling my eyes at her overdramatic self. she is acting like i leave for the districts like leland.

leland is my older brother and a peacekeeper, just like my dad was before he retired. right after graduating he packed his bags and went off to work in district 8. can't blame him, my mothers love can be overwhelming to say the least.

i am ripped from my thoughts when i hear august coming down the stairs, or rather falling as asher pushed him.
"why is the tv not on yet? i want to see the recap of the last games!"
"please asher, not while we're eating", my mother gasps, a frown on her soft feature. she's never been a huge fan of the actual games, she only enjoys the days leading up to it and all of the parties after. she find them too brutal and cruel. i can't blame her though.

"why not? it's part of our culture. don't you want us to be cultured?"
my brother is on the other side of the spectrum. he hates high society and socialising, so the only thing he finds fun is the actual fighting part.
"just stop it asher. you are not funny, you know?"
asher just rolls his eyes at augusts remark.

"do you want to do something after school together? you know, to celebrate that we are finally out of that hellhole?" i look expectingly into my brothers' direction.

"i can't. i have a date with cecily later, we will watch the recap. sorry lili." asher says, emphasising the part with the hunger games, just to spite my mother.
"i'm sorry, i have practise later. but after that we could go shopping?" august says. i nod, thankful that i don't have to spend the afternoon alone brooding in my room.

———

for the last day of school, today was rather unspectacular. some teachers wished us farewell, some didn't. the only interesting thing that really happened, was the rehearsal for next week, when we would finally and once and for all get our diplomas. i really can't wait.

right after school me and auggie went to the football field. he was this years team captain and also their goalkeeper. his playing got him a scholarship at a university, which we honestly wouldn't need, but it's nice to have.

i sit down on the sidelines and check my messages for any answer to my applications. i didn't get any. so i put on my headphones and start listening to music, because what else is there to do?

my brother is playing good today, there are only two players who managed to score while they are practising penalty shooting. i look over the field, the sun is burning hot at this time of year and suddenly i'm thankful that i used sunscreen today.

i feel myself slowly drifting of to sleep when i suddenly feel water being poured out over my head. shrieking i open my eyes:"you little shit!" i scream while trying to grab augusts water bottle to get revenge on him. even though i'm wearing shoes with heels i stand up and start chasing him over the field, while all of his teammates only watch and laugh.
