Olivia opened her eyes that morning. She let her nose take in the smell of fabric softener on her blanket. Rolling over, she allowed her blue eyes to look out of the window, across their beautiful property. She was going to miss Kentucky so much while she was gone. Throwing her blankets off, Olivia made her way to the bathroom.
She looked at her reflection. Her red hair was pointing everywhere. The bags under her bright eyes had grown deeper and darker. Sighing, she ran her mother's brush through her locks. Olivia's things had already been packed up the night before. The plan was to wake up and hit the road. Olivia and her mother had a five-hour trip ahead of them.
Olivia threw on a pair of leggings and a Willie Nelson T-shirt. She grabbed her phone from her room, taking it in one last time, before shutting the door. She walked down the hall into the living room. Her mother was already waiting on the couch. She had been scrolling on her phone.
Stacy looked up at her daughter with a smile. She was falling apart on the inside. However, she wanted this for Olivia. She wanted Olivia to meet her father.
"Are you ready?" Stacy asked Olivia, standing to her feet.
Olivia nodded. "I'm as ready as I will ever be."
Her mother gave her a hug, before walking out of the house behind her. Olivia opened the passenger door of the beetle bug. I am going to miss this car, Olivia thought. She watched her mother climb in the driver's seat and turn on the radio. Bob Dylan started softly singing through the speakers. Olivia smiled, bucking her seat belt.
"What are you grinning about?" Her mother joked, putting the car in gear and backing from their driveway.
"You have a good taste in music." Olivia said. "I never know what is going to be on the radio when you turn it on."
"Varity is the spice of life."
For the first half of the trip, Olivia and her mother drove in silence. Olivia's mind wondered about the father she never knew. She wondered about the grandparent she has. Is her grandmother still alive? She also had siblings. Olivia was going to deeply miss her mother. However, she was excited at the prospect of meeting her father. She wanted to demand answers. Why was she never good enough? Why did he never call?
She thought back to her mother's words. He had tried once before. Did he assume Olivia wanted what her mother did? She bit her lip, watching the trees pass through the window. She had so many questions. She wasn't sure a month would be enough to answer them all. It as her mother who first spoke up.
"What are you thinking about?"
Olivia glanced at her mother. She had her hands on the wheel, and eyes locked on the road.
"Just everything." Olivia commented, "This is so much to process."
"It is." Her mother agreed.
"My life has changed so much in the past few months. This is just another bomb."
"It's an opportunity." Her mother said, "Look at it that way."
Olivia nodded. "You're right mom, this is an opportunity."
Her mother smiled slightly, returning the car to silence. When they passed the Welcome To Mystic Falls sign, Olivia bit her lip. It was getting real.
"Have you ever been here?" Olivia asked her mom.
Her mother shook her head. "No, I haven't. I wish we had a more romantic story. Your father and I's attraction did not extend past lust."
