Walking back to school without having to worry about missing people again was nice. My vision from Christmas was still in the back of my mind, but I hadn't seen it since, so I couldn't worry about it now. I saw Nancy in Steve's car in the parking lot, so I decided to pop in.
"Just... It needs some reorganizing." I heard Nancy say as I opened the door and hopped into the backseat.
"Morning. Ooh, what's that?" I asked, pointing to the paper Nancy was holding.
"My essay." Steve said, looking down.
"Can I mark on it?" Nancy asked.
"Yeah, I guess."
"So, in the first paragraph, you used the basketball game versus Northern as a metaphor for your life, which is great. But then, around here, you start talking about your grandad's experiences in the war. And I... I don't see how they're connected."
"It connects because... because you know, we both won."
"Oh, um, that's definitely something." I said, trying to sound positive. It didn't really work out for very well according to the looks I got from Nancy and Steve in the front seat.
"Y/n, can't you magically write me a good essay or something?"
"Yeah, I can move stuff, and see stuff, and... that's about it."
"Well... maybe you can see... what a good essay looks like?" Steve bit his lip and looked at me.
"Yeah, doesn't really work that way, but I'm sure you'll figure it out." I patted Steve on the back.
"Do you think I should start from scratch?"
"No. I mean..." Nancy hesitated. "When's the deadline?"
"It's tomorrow for early application. Can you come and help me tonight?"
"We have our dinner tonight, remember?"
"Oh, my God!"
"We already canceled last week... You don't have to go. Just work on this."
"No, no, no. What's the point?"
"Hey, calm down."
"I'm calm. I'm calm. I'm just being honest. You know, I mean... I'll just end up working for my dad anyway."
"That's not true."
"I don't know, Nance. Is that such a bad thing? There's insurance and benefits and all that adult stuff. And if I took it, you know, I could be around for your senior year."
"Steve..."
"Just to look after you a little bit. Make sure you don't forget about this pretty face... Nance, I'm serious." Steve leaned over and kissed Nancy.
"Ew, get a room!" I jokingly yelled at them. Steve reaching his arm into the back seat and playfully smacked my leg. I chuckled. Steve looked back at Nancy.
"I love you."
"I love you, too." Nancy responded. We both looked up to see a car zooming through the parking lot, tires skirting across the concrete. We all got out of the car to see who was driving so obnoxiously. A blue car with a license plate from California pulled up into the spot, a boy with blond-gingerish hair cut into a mullet walked out of the driver's seat, smoking a cigarette. Out of the passenger side came a younger girl, probably in middle school, with red hair.
"Wow, I'm so impressed." I said sarcastically, rolling my eyes at the obvious display for attention.
The bell rang as Steve and I walked together in the hall, heading towards our first class, which we shared together this year.
