It had been a week since the beach incident and it seemed like Bong was once again asking for trouble.
Thankfully that day Jungkook had managed to save their asses. When Soohee and Jungkook reached home, Soohee's mom immediately noticed her drenched and sandy appearance.
"Soohee, why are you covered in sand?" her mom asked with concern. Soohee felt a pang of anxiety but quickly remembered what Bong had coached her to say. "Jungkook took Bong and me to the beach," she lied smoothly hoping it sounded convincing.
To her relief her mom's worried expression softened into a smile. "Oh, that sounds like fun. I'm glad you had a good time," she said seemingly buying the lie without any suspicion.
Jungkook, however, stood behind Soohee with a stern expression on his face. As a man of principles he disliked the idea of lying even if it was to protect yourself. Though he had agreed to cover for Soohee and Bong, watching her lie so casually in front of their mother made him uncomfortable. He hated that Soohee was becoming adept at deception.
"Dinner is almost ready. You both should freshen up." Mrs. Jeon said turning her smile to him. Jungkook nodded stiffly unable to muster a smile in return. "Yeah," he replied shortly.
Without another word, he walked upstairs to his room, his leather briefcase clutched tightly in his hand. He had always prided himself on his honesty and integrity and seeing Soohee lie so effortlessly troubled him deeply. He knew he would have to talk to her about it later.
Reaching his room, Jungkook closed the door behind him and set his briefcase on the desk. He loosened his tie and sat down on the edge of his bed running a hand through his hair in frustration. He loved his sister dearly and would do anything to protect her but he couldn't ignore the gnawing feeling that he needed to guide her onto a better path.
Downstairs Soohee let out a breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding. She was relieved her mom hadn't questioned the story further but a part of her felt guilty seeing Jungkook's reaction. She knew he was disappointed in her and that thought weighed heavily on her mind.
"Are you fucking kidding me? Jungkook-shi gave me a fucking lecture about how spoiled I'm becoming and that he's never going to take my shit again if I lie," Soohee exclaimed in frustration. She threw her hands up in the air as if the world were about to end.
Bong, however, remained unfazed. She knew how to get what she wanted in her own ways. Pouting, she fluttered her eyes innocently. "Please Soohee just for today. It's been 17 days since we last went to drink bubble tea together. I don't know why your brother refused-"
"Maybe because the place you want to go is far away and not our regular cafe," Soohee interrupted folding her arms below her chest and fixing Bong with a stern glare. She was determined not to be swayed by those boba eyes and pouty lips.
She had already disappointed Jungkook once and there was no way she was going to do it again. They lived in Nam-gu, Busan and Bong was asking them to visit a cafe she once went to with her parents in Ulsan.
Bong's pout deepened and she clasped her hands together in a pleading gesture. "But Soohee this place has the best bubble tea ever! It's worth the trip I promise."
Soohee shook her head as a no. "I can't, Bong. Jungkook was really upset with me. I can't afford to lie again or go somewhere far without permission."
"Then, then ask your mom," Bong urged with her hopeful eyes.
Soohee shook her head sadly. "I already asked her and all she said was 'Ask Jungkook' like always, and he refused like always."
Bong whined in frustration not knowing what to do. They were standing in front of the school gate, it was already past 4:30. Students were streaming out heading home while Soohee was waiting for Jungkook. Jungkook had a half day today and would come to pick her up.
"Then ask your brother again. Just cling to him or beg him holding his leg. It always works on my sister when I want something."
Soohee shot her a look of disbelief with 'No-way-in-hell I'm gonna do that' eyes.
Bong sighed crossing her arms over her chest. "Well, what else can you do? Jungkook's your best bet."
Soohee frowned glancing around as if Jungkook might miraculously appear there. "He's so stubborn though. He just doesn't get it."
The school grounds were emptying quickly and the late afternoon sun cast long shadows on the pavement.
Bong looked around with a defeated face, her eyes scanning the crowd of students still lingering near the school gate. Suddenly her gaze landed on someone and an idea popped into her head.
An evil smirk appeared on her lips and she licked her lips debating whether she should go through with it. She turned to Soohee who looked equally defeated. "How about someone else convince him?"
Soohee looked at Bong with wide eyes immediately sensing something was off from the mischievous glint in Bong's eyes. "What's going on inside that tiny brain of yours?" she asked narrowing her gaze and leaning back slightly as if trying to mind-read Bong.
Bong winked at her then pulled her bag in front of her, one strap hanging in the air. She pulled out a phone from the front chain of the bag-not just any phone but a very old model of Samsung, the kind that might have been used back in 2008-2009.
Samsung SGH-T919
Soohee's eyes widened further. "What are you planning to do with that ancient relic?"
Bong grinned holding up the phone like it was a treasure. "Give me your brother's number."
