"That's just the way life goes, I push my luck, it shows"

Lavender POV

Kate, Javi, and I went into a small town to help. The tornado hit them really hard. Kate had to push Javi to go help. Javi seems suspicious but I trust Kate's judgement.

We got to the town. No matter how many times I see the wreckage of a tornado, it shocks me every time. As expected, Tyler and his crew were there. I saw theirs trucks set up with the food and tshirts. Boone and Tyler were out at a house looking for something. No matter how things ended, these were still good people, they were my people.

I got out of the truck and Tyler immediately caught my eye. He gave me a small smile as a hi.

Kate saw the crew selling shirts.

"Do you see that Lavender, that's unbelievable" kate said while scoffing.

"Actually they are-"

She cut me off while walking away to give them a piece of her mind. I assumed she thought that they were trying to make money off of the families effected by the tornado. I liked that about kate, she always stood up for what she believed in. I didn't stop her cause I knew she would realize what they were actually doing. Kate was talking to the crew and I went to find Tyler. As I was walking toward him, I heard him ask the family what they were looking for, a dog they said.

"Hey there"

He looked up at me confused.

"We talking now dais- lavender" he said looking me in the eyes. We could always read each other better that way.

I smiled at him
"Just wanted to make sure you were ok"

He grinned and got into his cowboy stance. "Aw you were worried bout me, how sweet" he said once again trying to push something out of me, but I kept calm.

"I'm not as horrible as you think I am, I have a heart" I told him

He smiled "ah yes don't worry I know"

I blushed. No we must stay focused Lavender.

"I saw the crew is helping out. That's always sweet of you guys, you finally accepted my dads idea didn't you," I told him intrigued to see his answer.

He had a thinking face on before he responded. "Of course I couldn't break ties with old Phil. He's been teaching me a lot lately"

I laughed. "Ha you and my Dad always did have your own thing. Always thought you were marrying me just to officially call him dad-"

I stopped taking once I saw the look on his face. It was full of hurt and regret. He was biting his tongue. Shit I just had to bring up the engagement didn't I. It still stung. For both of us.

I changed the subject.

"So what else has he been teaching you. Let me guess, to not be such a douche" I said. I always have to add and insult. I don't know why. Maybe it's my fear of saying too much. Because saying too much to him will be like before. Before when we told each other everything. I was still getting used to seeing him again. And hating is just easier.

He look at me this time in a serious way, like he had been waiting to say it. Waiting for the chance to say:

"Well lately he's been teaching me how to stop running from things"

He just kept on staring at me after he said that. Waiting for my response. How am I supposed to respond. What the hell does that even means I know what it means but I'm going to pretend that I don't.

I cleared my throat and ended the painful staring contest and silence we were having.

"Um well good luck, hope you find the dog"
I said fast while walking away from him not needing to turn around to see his face that was full of defeat.

As I walked back to find Kate, I wondered what would happen if I stop trying to hate him and instead let him talk. Let him explain. But I already gave him the chance to explain and he didn't. That was that.

But what if?

What if things hadn't gone so bad before. Then were would we be now?
