Light drizzle, gray cloudy skies and everyone is inside while I stay out on the balcony, reaching out for the slight earth soaking rain. To be honest i never thought I'd make it this far with my never ending frostbite sickness. "Baba? Oh," tiny footsteps sound behind me, taking ahold of my feathered hand.
I chuckled and pat my little sister's head to which I know she's always despised it and squirmed out of them. She huffed furiously, then pivoting to call for mom like always. "Goodness children, when will you ever get along and talk it out like adults?" Mother chastised as she continued vacuuming, but she wasn't finished. "Berdly vanny! Come inside before you catch a cold!" She commands, I obliged, my sisters light footsteps tapping over to me, she stretched out her arms again once she was in my viewpoint and I carefully but gently picked her up into my arms; pushing her midnight blue bangs from her sky blue eyes. "Working night shift again mama?" I pick up her black leather shoes next to dads bigger brown boots, to which she immediately took, briskly removing the red heels.
"Gotta get the bills paid sweetheart." She replied instantly, typing the laces together in bunny ears."Oh, and DON'T forget to get the milk and chicken, EBT cards should be used sparingly for ONLY food." No room for argument in that tone.
No sweets and chips. Got it. I nod affirmatively, buttoning up my sister's coat to get her ready for shopping at G mart along-sides me. "....berdly? Luna?" There was a moment of silence, mother had put on her light blue long-sleeve dress shirt with navy blue pants. A heavy tense cloak of sorrow fell before the living room where we stood; slowly then did I begin to realize what she wanted to say. "Take care of each other, be safe." Lifting her gaze towards us, eyes brimming with tears.
"We'll be fine, mama." I assured her, despite my confidence wavering. We embraced, only for a moment, but it felt so warm. Some of my coldness in my body simmered down, even if it was only for a while; it meant a lot that someone cared rather than stray away from me. I hugged mother tightly but not too much, eventually, we let go. Her black tiny curls bobbing up and down as she kissed both our foreheads and left the apartment.
A sudden movement yanked my feathers from my non existent ear. "Bubba, I'm hungry." She said, holding a handful of pale blue feathers she so forcefully ripped off. Well, at least it counts as early preening season, with a heavy sigh, sat her in her toddler seat.
"Yogurt, and eggs for today my mini munchkin" I tell her as I mince the hard boiled eggs into squares, putting them in the pot to cook a few extra minutes until it steamed along with a bit of thyme and basil to make it pop. It's the first thing I've learned about since caring for human toddlers, especially when she has a full teeth set up for a seven years old.
She slammed her palms on the table again, making the loudest smack sound I have ever heard."Strawberry!" She paused momentarily once she saw my expression I wore. "Uh- please?" I nod, rubbing her head again playfully. "Berdly why!?" She begged dramatically, her hair now a mess. I stuck out my tongue, blowing raspberry. "I'm telling!" She managed angrily, swinging her little feet out of frustration.
"Foods ready." Those words put a stop to whatever tantrum she's about to make. Almost immediately after placing the plate in front of her she starts eating, plastic fork in hand. I put a small cup of water for her to drink from as well, heading to the kitchen to prepare my own food.
"Can we get Mr Potato a friend?" She asks, proudly holding up the figurine from Toy Story. "Depending how much they cost then I will buy it with whatever allowances I have." Then I added with a more firm tone, "Only this one time. Do you understand me?" She returned my previous gesture from earlier, crossing her arms and huffed, her chest puffed out in stubbornness.
"Bleh," she said with her tongue sticking out
