Five flirtations at Ray's Occult Books that didn't go anywhere and one that did.

"Tell me, what do you think of the place, Dr. Spengler?" their realtor Gloria purrs at Egon after they've toured the empty storefront and the apartment above it. "Is this the one? Can we drop your friend off? And then let's say, I take you out for some champagne to celebrate your new property?"

Gloria has long burgundy fingernails and lipstick to match. Permed and frosted hair in a frizzy halo around her head. Big turquoise and gold statement earrings. Blazer with thick shoulder pads.

As they've toured potential spaces for Ray's bookstore, she's basically ignored Ray while giving Egon a lot of smouldering looks. Ray Stantz may not always know when someone is flirting with him, but he sure knows when someone is coming on to Egon. It happens quite a bit. They usually give up quickly. This woman is outrageous.

Spengler pretends oblivion to her attraction. That doesn't matter to him. But she's being openly rude to Stantz and that does matter. This will be Ray's bookstore and he will own the building. Spengler is beginning to bristle on his beloved's behalf.

They stand on the scratched and dusty wooden floor and look around the empty space.

"We'll take it, won't we, sweetheart?" Ray answers, blinking up at Egon not-so-innocently. Leaning into him for the briefest moment. Egon smirks. He has never addressed Egon thusly in his life and Stantz almost laughs at the ill fitting endearment. Dr. Egon Spengler is many things but not a sweetheart. However, it gets the point across to Gloria.

Realizing her mistake, Gloria blushes so hard they can see it beneath the layers of bronzer. Ray inwardly braces in case she's about to refuse to do business with them. There's a little sneer of embarrassed disgust for a second, but then she covers it by getting back to the real estate deal.

Ray and Egon share a quick glance of comfort and connection. Money trumps homophobic assumptions most times, they've noticed since becoming famous. It is still uncomfortable.

Gloria calls in Ray's offer on the building right there in the empty shop. Making a fuss about using one of those new portable telephone devices the size of a briefcase. It drops the call four times before it goes through. She shouts trying to be heard through the static.

While they wait, Egon starts mentally designing a better, smaller portable phone and idly coming up with a cellular tower and satellite network to support it. Ray starts mentally organizing the retail space into cozy book nooks, imaging it filled with his treasures. He can almost see it.

They go back to Gloria's office and sign some papers. Egon who normally does not touch in public, keeps his hand on the small of Ray's back the entire time and says nothing.

There are no further offers of champagne.

Later, Egon and Ray go back to the firehouse and share a bottle of sparkling grape juice and box of Twinkies to celebrate. No ghost calls come in, but they rarely do these days. They watch Elvira's Movie Macabre and Ray falls asleep on the couch an hour in, as usual. Egon reads with Ray's heavy head on his lap until he gets tired enough to wake Ray and take him to bed.

"That carpenter has the hots for you, Dr. S," Janine teases Ray.

The petite redhead has come over from the firehouse to see what's happening. She's wearing forest green and Ray always thinks she looks great in that color. He has no idea that's why she wears it around him so often. Nor does he know her leopard print tights are because Egon likes animal print.
