I am bustling around my tiny apartment kitchen, looking for my coffee machine. Natasha is probably right. I should try and clean the place up once in a while. The doorbell rings and I jump. Uh oh. Who could it be? Today wasn't my day to host poker, was it? Anyways, it's too early. I glance at the alarm clock. Or too late. The time read 1:43 am. Ugh, I was probably drunk. Again. Who would be at my door at almost two in the morning? Landlord? I mean, she did come at some pretty unusual times, but I had paid my dues. Who could it be. The doorbell rings again, insistently. I groan.
"Okay, okay, I'm coming, geez." I run my hand through my unruly dirty-blonde hair and sigh as I step on one of my arrows. Luckily it's an old explosive arrow that's already been detonated. I wince and limp towards the door. I swing the door open.
"Nat? What... it's almost two in the morning!" Natasha takes in my unruly hair, unshaved beard, shadowed eyes, rumpled shirt and torn pajama pants.
"When was the last time you slept Clint?"
I blink, momentarily thrown by the question. "Uh... not sure. Couple of days, I guess? Since Hill fired me. What are you doing here?" Natasha steps inside, pushing past me and making her way to the kitchen. She glances around at the mess with a grimace.
"Clint, this place looks like a disaster zone. And you look like you haven't seen a bed in ages."
I scratch the back of my head, feeling a bit embarrassed. "Yeah, well, I've been a little... occupied. And you still haven't answered my question"
Natasha turns to face me, arms crossed. "Occupied with what? Because it sure doesn't look like you've been working on anything productive."
"Just... stuff," I mutter, shuffling awkwardly. "I—you still haven't answered my question. You're avoiding my—wait... if you were still with S.H.I.E.L.D., then you wouldn't be here. What happened?"
Nat sighed, "Yeah, I left S.H.I.E.L.D., after Ross arrested Steve I tried getting Hill to appeal for him. Hill, well... it's complicated, but something happened and she let me go."
"Oh, uhm... I'm sorry?" Nat laughed at my cluelessness.
"It's for the best," she said with a small, rueful smile. "S.H.I.E.L.D. isn't what it used to be, Clint. Things have changed too much. It was time for me to go." I nod. After Fury died, nothing's been the same. All of a sudden the doorbell rings and I jump to my feet, landing on one of my sharp arrows.
"Oh s***! Ow!" Nat leaps to her feet as well.
"S*** Clint! Why do you have arrows lying on the ground?!" I grit my teeth and hobble to the door.
"I don't know. Musta knocked it over last night. Or—earlier this night." Nat groans.
"You were drunk," it was a statement, not a question.
"Yeah. I—" I swing open the door to see a man leaning weakly against the doorframe, clutching his side. He stumbled forward and collapsed into me. "Bruce? Oh my God, Bruce?"
"Clint. I... I need your help. Ah!" Bruce cries out in pain as I take ahold of him. HE is bleeding, and I think his ribs are broken.
"Okay. Okay. You're okay. Nat?" Nat comes over to Bruce. I smile weakly at her as she takes Bruce from me and lead him gently through the explosive minefield that is my living room to the couch. I walk over and turn to Bruce. "How'd you manage to get into all this trouble? You're supposed to be the pacifist scientist, the one who doesn't like to fight." I joke as I plop down next to him.. I must have hit a nerve because Bruce breaks down, sobbing. Nat glares at me. "What? What'd I say? Bruce?" He shakes his head. "Bruce, what happened?"
