I awake in an unfamiliar room. As I slowly gather my wits about me I notice the mess all over the floor and can't help but laugh. The dirty clothes, old arrows and broken glass? This has got to be Clint's place. Ow. It hurts to laugh. I struggle to sit up as Clint enters the room.
"Good morning, sleeping beauty. Hope you slept better than me. Sorry 'bout the mess, I haven't been... uhm, quite myself lately." I give a small smile as I survey the danger zone.
"Yeah, I can see that. Hey, uh, Clint... thanks. For letting me crash here. I didn't mean to impose." Clint smiles warmly.
"Hey, it's no problem. My place is always open to you. And anyways, Nat does this all the time. I'm used to it." He pauses. "I'm just going to say it. What does 'impose' mean?" I chuckle. Clint give me a look.
"You're not serious?" Clint looks a little taken aback.
"Should I not be? I don't know what the hell impose means!" I grin at his antics.
"Okay then. Uh... Impose—a verb—to force something unwelcome or unfamiliar to be accepted or put in place." Clint laughs.
"There's my little dictionary. I can always could on you for things like this." I smile lightly and realize that had been Clint's goal. Cheer me up by acting unreasonably dumb. Also, I'm pretty sure that I had heard Clint say 'impose' before. "Bruce, uhm, how are you holding up? I mean, after what happened. You didn't tell us much, but your injuries pretty much tell the rest." I sigh remembering last night and my fight with Tony.
"I'm still here. That's gotta count for something." I run my hand through my rumpled hair and pull myself out of bed. The cold air immediately hits my bare chest and I grab the blanket to cover myself. Clint laughs a little, then frowns. He hesitates, like he wants to say something but wasn't really sure of it.
"Y'know... I can see why he likes you." he says quietly. What? What in hell is Clint Barton talking about?!
"I-I what? Who? What the hell are you—" I stutter out. Clint laughs, his eyes glinting. There's always been something about him I could never understand. He's the kind of guy who'll shoot first, ask questions later. You'd never expect him to actually care. But he does. He was the glue of the Avengers, just like Cap was our leader. Loud and boisterous, always making bad jokes at his own expense, but inside was a really kind, gentle human being. If he let you close enough to see that side, you were lucky.
"Oh come on man. Don't play the fool. That's my job!" I just shake my head mutely. Clint groans and hits his forehead with the heel of his hand. "Tony. He never stopped loving you." I freeze. That had been ONE TIME. No one knew, or so I had thought. All of a sudden, a memory washes over me.
It was night at the Avengers Tower. Everyone should have been asleep. After all, the Avengers had just taken down a big-time HYDRA base. But, I couldn't sleep. All I could think about was the disaster that had almost unfolded. I had felt the other guy, and his rage had been so strong. He had destroyed a small town, and killed some of its inhabitants. All because of some little punk. The punk, and my inability to control the other guy. It was my fault. The rest of the team had tried to get these thoughts out of my head, saying it wasn't my fault, I couldn't have done anything, but that means nothing. Tony, the only other who had been mentally 'touched' had retired to his room as soon as we had reached the tower, and I did the same. Now, though, I couldn't close my eyes without seeing the terrified faces of the townsfolk. All dead, all my fault. Before I'm fully aware of what I'm doing I roll out of bed and head down to the lab. I need to work. Do something. I had just finished modifying some of Clint's arrows to make them more powerful when a voice stops me.
