They say
Once
It was a beautiful house
Full of love
And laughter.
They say
Children lived there
With parents who cared
And the sun blessed the walls
With its glorious light
As memories were made
In a time long ago.
But now
Only ghosts live there
Among the darkened halls
And broken rooms
And the peeling paint
Where the weather
And the ages
Has desecrated
All remnants of touch.
Standing here alone
Listening to the wind
Whistle through the dusty cracks
And rusted frames
I thought I heard
For the briefest of seconds
The yip of a puppy
Long passed
And the chatter of happy voices
Who do not seem to know
That they no longer
Have a place
Among the living.
