A notification chimed on Maddi's phone, pulling her from her thoughts. Her heart skipped a beat as she saw Jessie's name on the screen. With trembling fingers, she opened the message.

"Sure," the reply read, curt and devoid of emotion. "We can talk. Come to Millie's party tomorrow night. We'll find a quiet corner."

Maddi's stomach churned. This wasn't the response she had hoped for. The coldness in Jessie's tone sent a shiver down her spine. Was this a good idea after all?

Katie noticed the change in Maddi's demeanor. "What's wrong? Did she reply?"

Maddi nodded, handing the phone to Katie.

Katie scanned the message, a frown forming on her brow. "Well, that's not very friendly," she remarked.

"I know," Maddi sighed. "Maybe this was a mistake."

"Maybe," Katie agreed. "But you won't know unless you go." She gave Maddi a reassuring smile. "Look, it's just one party. You don't have to stay long. Just have the conversation, get it off your chest, and then you can move on."

Maddi chewed on her lip, her mind racing. She knew Katie was right. This was her chance to finally get closure, to put the past behind her. But the thought of facing Jessie in front of all her teammates was intimidating.

"Okay," she finally said, her voice barely a whisper. "I'll go."

"That's my girl!" Katie cheered, giving Maddi a playful nudge. "You got this! And hey, who knows? Maybe you'll end up having sex again."

Maddi rolled her eyes with a smirk. "Oh please, as if. I just want to clear the air, not rekindle anything."

Katie winked, her eyes twinkling with amusement. "You've been telling me for all night about how amazing Kristie is. Maybe you should just go talk to her instead of Jessie."

Maddi's jaw dropped, a blush creeping onto her cheeks. "Shut up, Katie! Kristie is just a friend."

Katie threw her head back and laughed, thoroughly enjoying her friend's flustered reaction. "I'm just teasing you, Mads," she said, still chuckling. "But seriously, good luck with the whole Jessie thing. I'm here for you if you need anything."

Maddi sighed, pushing Katie playfully. "Yeah, yeah. Now let's go find that outfit. I need to look my best if I'm going to face my ex at a party tomorow night."

The two friends headed to Maddi's room, their laughter echoing through the apartment. Despite the nerves and apprehension, Maddi couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation. Maybe this party would be just what she needed to finally put the past behind her and move on with her life.

---------------

The next evening, Maddi found herself standing outside Millie's house, her nerves on edge. She took a deep breath and pushed open the door, the sound of music and laughter washing over her.

As she scanned the crowd, her eyes landed on Jessie, who was deep in conversation with a group of teammates. Jessie looked up, her eyes meeting Maddi's across the room. A flicker of surprise crossed her face, then she gave Maddi a curt nod and turned back to her friends.

Maddi's stomach tightened. This wasn't going to be easy.

The party was in full swing, a vibrant mix of music, laughter, and clinking glasses. Maddi hesitated on the threshold, her eyes scanning the crowd for a familiar face when she caught her eye with someone.

Leah, her bright smile radiant in the dim lighting, was standing near the kitchen door, chatting animatedly with a group of people. Maddi's heart skipped a beat. She hadn't expected to see Leah here.
