Chapter 7: Meeting the family

Tom completely forgot to move his mask from his chin over his nose. He was so comfortable around Jake that he didn't even notice it when he sat down at the table. Conner was at the table. He briefly greeted Tom not mentioning his scars. Ally arrived with a I'm as hungry as a bear which came off as taunting to Jake. Both of them exchanging scornful looks. Aiden sat down with an eyeroll and sighed.

"Someone reminded me why we still have to eat together." exclaimed Aiden.

"Because we are a family, Aiden. At least we should eat together." appeased Conner.

"We might be but Jake isn't!" scuffed Ally, "Why is someone so horrible still here!"

"Allyson!" shouted Conner, "At least get yourself together at dinner! We have a guest."

"Oh. Umm. Sorry. I didn't notice you."

Tom was quite taken aback by this dynamic and he noticed how tens Jake was. He just gave a quick wave at Ally because he didn't know what else to do.

"This is Tom. He is Jake's friend and will be staying with us for a while." introduced Conner Tom to his children, "Tom this is my daughter Ally she is almost out of high school and the boy next to her is my son Aiden. He recently came back from a camp tv show."

"Hi, Tom. I hope we didn't totally ruin our first impression here. Hehe" said Aiden while glancing at Ally but she just scoffed, "Don't mind her. She is in a mood."

"So, Tom... How come you're friends with Jake of all people? I didn't even think he was able to make any." taunted Ally.

"Well... I don't know what impression you guys have of him but he is one of the kindest people I ever met." answered Tom honestly making Jake ease up a bit.

"Wow. You must not know many people."

"Ally! Could you chill!" complained Aiden not pleased with how his sister behaved.

Conner nodded in agreement. He would have stepped in if Aiden hadn't. Jake got way too tens and angry but he didn't want to make anything any worse again. When he was younger he always started shit between them, like Ally did now. The worst part was that Ally was just nine at the time while he was sixteen. He should have acted better. He was the older one but he didn't. The arguments between them never stopped but now Jake doesn't even engage anymore. He decided just taking it would be the better option. From all the stress his kimchi bibimbap tasted bland and he didn't feel hungry anymore. Tom looked a Jake and noticed that he had barely eaten anything. He wanted to be there for him. He got some of the dinner on his plate and begun to eat.

"You were so right, Jake. You do make a mean kimchi bibimbap! How can something taste so good." exclaimed Tom loudly.

"T-Thanks." blushed Jake.

"Is yours not good? You can have some of mine." said Tom holding out some food between his chopsticks in front of Jake's mouth while giving him an encouraging smile.

At this moment, it was just them in their own little word making Jake finally relax and he took the bite. It tasted better than Jake remembered and he happily chewed his food.

"Want some more?"

"It's okay, Tom. I have my own." laughed Jake finally able to eat again, satisfying the spy.

Their romantic moment didn't go unnoticed but before Ally could say anything Aiden kicked her shin. For the first time in so long the atmosphere was lighter and they all ate in peace.

"I'm curious, Tom. How did you meet Jake? He doesn't really go out a lot." asked Aiden to strike up a conversation.

"It's a funny story actu-" Tom was interrupted by Jake.

"Let's go, Tom. You still need to help me with job hunting." said Jake dragging Tom with him, leaving the rest to clean up dinner.

...

"Sorry you had to go through that." Jake sighed when they were back in his room.

"Do you want to tell me?" asked Tom softly placing a hand on Jakes shoulder.

"It's probably better than keeping it in." agreed Jake and both sat down on his bed,
"My life went down the drain when I was sixteen. My parents found out I was gay and their reaction was less then positive. So I thought I could stay with my boyfriend at the time. But that plan went out the window just like my feelings for him when I saw him cheating. Apparently my surprise visit was a surprise to him. Who would have thought. And after all that he had the audacity to break up with me. Why cheat on me if you want to break up anyways!"

"He sounds awful. I'm sorry you had to go through that."

"Believe it or not this wasn't the end of that day. I didn't know where to go so I wandered around trying to process everything. Before I knew it I was alone in a dark alley but I actually wasn't alone. I ran from two muggers but in the end they caught me, took my money and beat me up for running. I felt like dying. But then I met Conner. He took me in and treated me like his son but how did I repay him! I lashed out at him. I lashed out at his kids. I made everyone around me just a miserable as I was. And now I can't fix this. Both Aiden and Ally won't give me anymore chances. I should just leave. Why am I still here! I probably deserved being left for bear food by Ally. Heck even Ellie was right that if I weren't so annoying my ex wouldn't have cheated on me."

"Don't even think that, Jake!" Tom shook the complete mess of the boy he knew, grabbing him firmly on the shoulders,
"The Jake I got to meet definitely didn't deserve any of that. You are kind and almost too trusting. Yes you make mistakes but so does everybody. We have to live with our scars but that doesn't mean we can't change or make things better if we want."

"Do you really believe I can do it?" asked Jake still unsure.

"I have faith in you, Jake." vouched Tom looking lovingly at Jake which prompted him to hug Tom.

I hope you liked this chapter. It should explain some things. Hopefully. Ellie was friends with Jake in high school in this au but just like in disventure camp it didn't end well between them.

Also I didn't plan out too much of the story. As you might have noticed. I really need to think of what to write next right now. -.-' Sorry.
