"Stop!" Y/n screamed, struggling against to man that was holding her hostage. She looked helplessly at Jack as he dogged Snyders awful dagger. "LEAVE HIM ALONE!!!"
Y/n watched as Snyder stabbed Jack in the stomach, blood sputtering out of the wound.
"NO!" Y/n struggled harder against the man holding her. "LET ME GO!!!" With a curt nod from Snyder, the man and him walked away, leaving Y/n with Jack.
"This is what happens when you put up a fight you know you cannot win," Snyder whispered in her ear, leaving her.
Y/n ran over to Jack, kneeling beside him. "H-he-here," she stuttered, handing him a cloth to hold over the wound. "P-pl-please u-use it."
"Y/n..."
"Please!"
Jack reluctantly took the cloth. "Y/n..."
"Don't"
"Y/n... listen to me." He waited until she nodded, "I... I lo-" He never finished that sentence.
"No!" she screamed. "No, no, no! Ple-please... do-don't le-leave me." She cried, hugging his deathly still body.
Y/n woke up with a start, drenched in sweat. Her breathing uneven as she was hyperventilating. Looking around, she realized she was in her room.
She also realized it was like 3 am.
The memories of the nightmare started flashing behind her eyes.
"LEAVE HIM ALONE!!!"
"This is what happens when you put up a fight you know you cannot win."
"Y/n... listen to me. l... I lo-"
She jumped out of bed, rushing to put on her closest shoes, thankfully being tennis shoes. She slowly and quietly opened the door, praying the other newsies weren't there. Namely Race.
Her prayers were answered, Crutchie stood by the door. Without having Y/n telling him where she was going, he gave thumps up and a wink. Without thinking too much on the wink, she made her way up to the roof. On her way there, she was thinking about what the dream Jack was going to say.
"l... I lo-"
He possibly couldn't have been saying he loved her, right? Why did it matter, it was just a nightmare. But that didn't stop Y/n's heart from fluttering.
Reaching the top floor, she stood in front of the door leading onto the roof.
As her eyes adjusted, she found herself over the dark, cold city.
She walked to the left side of the roof, praying to find Jack. The universe, thankfully, answered her prayers. She lowered herself down, looking down at his peaceful face. At least he looks like he is having a better dream.
Y/n turned around, walking back to the door. She went there to make sure Jack was still there. Going to open the door, she heard a weak, "Who's there?" But the words were slurred, so it sounded like, "hoos darr?"
Panicking, Y/n went back across the roof, walking back to his makeshift bed.
"Fox? What are you doing here?"
"I... um... was just checking on you."
"But, why?"
Jack's dead body in the pool of blood flashed through her mind.
"Fox, you look like you's seen a ghost. What's wrong?" His eyes held genuine concern for her.
That was when she broke down. Her legs gave out as she fell to the ground, her sobs shaking her body harshly.
"Fox? Fox!" She dimly heard Jack running towards her, but all she could hear was the nightmare.
The screams. The blood. The pain.
His deathly pale body.
"Fox!"
Dagger in his stomach
"Fox!"
Blood dripping from his wound
"Fox!"
His lifeless eyes, looking through her.
"Y/n!" She snapped back to the present, suddenly aware of Jack in front of her on the floor.
"Y/n, are you ok? What happen?" he asked, looking intently in her eyes as if it gave him the answers.
She opens her mouth, then closed it again. She kept trying for a few minutes, but still makes no sound. After a few minutes she can speak again.
"Can I tell you something?"
"Of course, Y/n."
That was when she realized he'd been calling her "Y/n"
She took a breath and shared the nightmare. She was shaking so much, Jack had to steady her. But by the end, they were both shaking.
"Y/n, you know that's not real. Right?"
She struggled to nod. "But... it- it could hap-happen." She stuttered.
"I know. But I'm not going anywhere. Ok, Y/n?"
She managed a weak nod as she clung to Jack like her life depended on it.
It probably did, to be honest.
She didn't know how long they were on the floor, arms wrapped around each other. But all she knew was she felt safe.
She was safe.
She was in the safety called Jack's arms.
