꧁꧂The group gathered around, trying to figure out their next plan. There were two herds they were tracking, both growing in size and were walking in directions that could keep them bottled in. Rick decided they'd head back where they came from and go west, an area that hadn't combed through yet.
Lori was maybe only a month away from giving birth, maybe even less than that and Rick knew they needed to find a place where they could stay for weeks, not just overnight or a few hours. While some went to the creek to fill up on water, Rick went with Daryl to go hunt.
When they rejoined the group on the road, Rick came back with a crazy idea. They'd stumbled upon a prison. Crawling with walkers. But while Daryl just thought it was a shame that the place had gone to waste, Rick decided they had enough to people to take the place.
So he led them over and used a pair of bolt cutters to cut a hole in the outermost fence. There was a small walkway between it and the inner fence that surrounded the courtyard, which was crawling with walkers. Once they were in, Glenn used a wire to close up the hole they cut.
Inside the walkway, the walkers snarled as they ran up to the gates, haven't seeing a fresh meal since they turned.
"It's perfect," Rick said. "If we can shut that gate, prevent more from filling the yard, we can pick off these walkers. We'll take the field by tonight."
"But the gate's surrounded," Vanessa said, thinking this was a horrible idea.
"I'll do it. You guys cover me" Glenn offered.
"No. It's a suicide run" Maggie shook her head.
"I'm the fastest" Glenn argued.
"No, you, Maggie, and Beth draw as many as you can over there. Pop 'em through the fence. Daryl and Vanessa, go back to the other tower. Carol, you've become a pretty good shot. Take your time. We don't have a lot of ammo to waste. Hershel, you and Carl take this tower. I'll run for the gate."
Vanessa couldn't believe what her brother was willing to do. "You're insane, you know that right? There's like a million different ways this could go wrong" she said.
"I know. That's why I want you up there, making sure nothing happens" he told her.
Vanessa sighed but knew there was no way to talk him out of it. So she just headed with Daryl up to the guard tower, ready to take out as many as she could. Vanessa's hands were steady on her rifle as she took aim at the nearest walker.
The group opened fire, creating a wall of noise and bullets as they worked to clear a path for Rick. Vanessa's shots were precise, each one taking down a walker with deadly efficiency. She glanced over at Daryl, who was firing arrows in rapid succession, each one finding its mark.
"Keep 'em off Rick!" Daryl shouted, his voice carrying over the chaos.
"I'm trying!" Vanessa replied, her eyes darting from target to target.
