[ the big spot ]
꧁꧂
As Daryl walked through the outdoor dining area to grab breakfast from Carol he was taken aback by the amount of people that greeted him. Carol smiled, seeing how uncomfortable all the attention made him but she was happy he was getting the recognition he deserved.
"Just so you know, I liked you first," she said, handing him a bowl of food.
"Stop" he grumbled, taking a bite of his food. "You know, Rick brought in a lot of them, too."
"Not recently. Give the stranger sanctuary, keeping people fed, you're gonna have to learn to live with the love" she told him but Daryl just rolled his eyes. Carol looked up, a small smirk on her face as Vanessa walked over. "Speaking of love" she mumbled.
Daryl looked at her confused before he heard the familiar clanking of bracelets and necklaces coming their way. He always said they could hear Vanessa coming before they saw her.
"Morning!" she greeted, unusually chipper as she joined Carol behind the grill.
"It's not even noon and you're awake. What's wrong?" Carol teased.
"Ha-ha. I heard you were on breakfast duty this morning and knew I couldn't miss it" she said, taking a bowl before she walked over to Daryl, taking food from his plate.
"You got your own," he said, not stopping her.
"Yeah, but yours always taste better for some reason," she said.
With her back turned, Carol shot Daryl a look, but he shook his head subtly, warning her to keep quiet.
"We're still going back out to Big Spot right?" Vanessa asked as Daryl nodded.
"Before you two go, I need to show you something," Carol said, signaling to Patrick, a boy a little older than Carl, to take over breakfast duties.
"Uh, Mr.Dixon" Patrick called out before they left. Both Vanessa and Carol had to bite their cheek to stop from laughing. "I just wanted to thank you for bringing that deer back. It was a real treat, sir. And I'd be honored to shake your hand" he said.
Daryl glanced at Vanessa and Carol before he made a show of licking his fingers clean before shaking the poor boy's hand.
Patrick's eyes widened in surprise and a bit of discomfort, but he still managed a grateful smile.
As they walked away, Vanessa couldn't resist teasing him. "So, Mr. Dixon, when can I get your autograph? I hear you're quite the hero around here."
Daryl grunted, trying to play it cool. "Cut it out."
"No, really! I'm serious," she said, mockingly earnest. "I mean, first, you're saving people, and now you've got fans lining up for handshakes. Next thing you know, they'll be making statues in your honor."
