Nick stayed over at the Gilbert House that night in Elena's bed. Jenna assumed she'd left with Stefan and they'd be back by the end of the night but come morning, Elena was nowhere to be found.
Jeremy had gone too, being sure to check on Nick before he left. She was still sleeping, quite calmly, and he couldn't help but linger for a moment. Seeing her in the state she was in yesterday scared him.
It was the closest he'd ever come to telling her he liked her.
It was a new development, one he had just crossed paths with a few days ago.
Darlene called some nights back, an interrogation in her throat ready to fire at him. When Jeremy answered the phone she took a deep breath and began firing questions, starting with "Do you even realize you like her?"
Jeremy pinched his face in, opening his mouth to respond before Darlene cut it once more to continue. "How could you not have noticed by now? Do you honestly still think you two are as friendly as you were two weeks ago?"
"What are you talking about?" Jeremy asked quickly, trying to beat Darlene before she could ramble again.
A gruff sigh came from the phone, voicing her disappointment. "I'm talking about Nick. The girl you have a crush on."
"I don't—" He almost denied it. Truly, he expected himself to but the second he had to admit it out loud, the words never came. "Okay, I'm not—" He croaked searching for an answer but there was nothing to say. He couldn't deny how he felt. Not anymore.
As Darlene began to speak again, raving about how she knew it all along, Jeremy began to ponder.
When they were younger, Jeremy knew Nick had a crush on him. She had told him so. She even kissed him on the cheek which he then got teased about by Elena and Matt for a week.
But recently, something had shifted. It was growing increasingly difficult to stay mad at her, and even when he was mad he still couldn't help his want to be around her. He failed a practice test just so he could ensure she would be around for longer. When she was sick, he called and checked up on her before addressing the phone call. He offered to come over.
