They had returned to Mildrith's lands. Uhtred had murdered Oswald, which upset Mildrith. Athena tried everything to comfort the woman, but she supported what her brother did.

Athena circled the spoon in her hands in the food in front of her. Uhtred, Mildrith and Leofric sat around the table also, the room filled with an awkward silence.

"Food is good, Mildrith." Leofric cleared his throat, speaking up as he turned to the redhead. "Thank you."

"I'm pleased you like it." She uttered, not bothering to eat her food, clearly still annoyed at Uhtred.

Athena held an awkward look on her face as she brought the spoon to her lips. "I was beginning to believe you had lost your tongue, wife." Uhtred spoke up, making Athena turn to him with a quiet sigh, knowing this would turned into an argument. "I was worried."

"I doubt it." Mildrith shook her head.

"She grieves for the thief." Uhtred shortly explained, making Athena and Leofric share a look, both of them not wanting to be there.

"Not my business." Leofric quickly said.

"He killed a man in have known all my life." Mildrith spoke, narrowing her eyes at her husband. "He refuses to lay wergild to a family I have known all my life, and the village my father helped build now call him Uhtred the Godless."

"Not forgetting I refuse to have my son baptised a Christian." He sarcastically said, looking over at Mildrith from across the table.

Leofric went to stand. "I'll excuse myself."

"Me too." Athena cleared her throat, flashing both of them a smile as she went to stand.

"Sit, please." Uhtred told both of them, shaking his head at Athena. "I'll stop." He told the pair.

Athena closed her eyes for a moment, looking over at Leofric before sitting back down, prompting her chin on her palm.

Leofric also reluctantly sat back down.

The four sat in silence before Uhtred spoke up once more. "Tomorrow I'll be gone." Athena bit back a groan, closing her eyes once more.
