Tempest enters her old school house, the bitter cold air of her small Russian hometown nipped at the rips in her jeans. The day was normal. She woke up early for school, ate a quick breakfast and said goodbye to her new family cat by filling its bowl in case it got hungry while she was out. She wore a slightly oversized grey hoodie with the hood tugged over her head, covering her jet-black pixie haircut. Her old, worn converse tied to her feet.
Her hands stuffed into her pockets as she let out a shuddering sigh, the cold air forming her breath into a steam cloud that flew behind her. The old school house was a huge brick building with very minimal heating. Her teachers were almost as bitter as the freezing cold snow that flurried from the grey-colored sky.
The day was normal.
Or so she thought.
As soon as she enters third period she knows something is off. There was a tense aura in the room that made her chest feel tight and her limbs heavy. Her usual bullies stared at her as she entered the classroom, tardy again. Their faces were smug and she knew they were silently mocking her. A feeling of dread settled in her stomach as she sat down in the creaky metal chair of her desk. She could only imagine what they'd do to her once she stepped foot outside the classroom for lunch.
The clock hits the next period. Lunchtime.
She snatches up her things as quickly as she could, speeding out of the room. She practically feels the bullies hot on her heels, and she turns a corner.
"Just where do you think you're going.. Cat girl?"
Her path is blocked by one of the bullies. A huge boy who she knew to be called Jeremy. Just as she was about to turn around and leave the other two bullies - who were both girls- closed in behind her. Her heart sank to her toes.
"what do you want from me!?.." she shouts. The other children in the hall seemed to come to a dead stop, staring at her and the three bullies.
"You were late again! You know what that means!" The girls behind her teased, closing the distance between her and the boy.
Suddenly, she's grabbed by two hands on her shoulders. The boy cackles behind her, a horrible sound that she'd never forget. At almost light speed, one of the girls sends her foot into Tempest's gut.
Again
And again
And again
She felt like vomiting. The pain was unimaginable. It lingered and stung like a vaccine but ached like a fresh bruise. The children that had stopped began to laugh at her. She wanted the pain to stop. She wished this bullying would stop. She just wanted to go home to her cat and her parents. Away from the pain. She almost didn't realize what she did.
The kicking stopped. The laughter was cut off by harsh gasps.
She opens her eyes.
Tempest had taken out a pencil from her pocket and plunged it into one of the girl's guts. The girl's eyes widen with terror and she gargles as blood pooled in her throat and stained her shirt. Tempest releases her grip on the pencil, letting the girl fall to her knees and wail in agony.
Children shrieked and sprinted away into classrooms as teacher's eyes fixed on Tempest. The two bullies that remained backed away, the same look of terror plastered to their faces. Soon the stabbed girl doubled over and began convulsing with shock. Teachers rushed to her side, screaming at Tempest. She couldn't hear anything except the heartbeat that thundered in her ears. She ran, panic overwhelming her senses.
She speeds through an exit door, her vision clouded as she dashes through alleys and eventually into woods. She comes to a skidding stop, panting wildly to catch her breath. The laughing and screams replayed in her mind, taking over her panicked thoughts. She lets out a blood curdling scream that echoed through the wood. Her panic began to ebb away, replaced with a feeling of pain. Something inside her changed, almost like a switch flipped and changed her.
She felt the pain in her head first. Her scalp parted and stretched into feline ears that turned and perked at every sound she heard. It hurt in her teeth next as they grew rapidly and sharpened into points. Then came her fingers, her nails would unsheathe into blade-sharp claws that dug into the ground as she groaned in agony. Lastly her back. The worst pain by far. A stalk of bone and skin extended from her pelvis like an extension of her spine. It cracked and squelched and grew until it reached her feet.
And then everything stopped.
She fell asleep.
And it was quiet.
