iii. lemon pie

THE YOUNGEST PRINCESS IN THE COURT walked gracefully through the corridors of the imposing castle, proudly carrying a lemon pie she had prepared with the diligent help of the maids and cooks. She knew that Prince Jace had a weakness for this dessert, and she wanted to surprise him with something made with her own hands.

Beside her, Lorcan followed with a firm step, his expression mixing curiosity and slight mockery.

"Explain to me again your little obsession with Prince Jacaerys. Haven't you noticed how useless he is with a sword?" he said, provoking a withering look from the young girl.

"I'm not obsessed with him, Lorcan. I just want to be his friend," she responded with dignity as she quickened her pace.

"Friend, sure," he mocked. "I don't understand why you waste your time with Earys."

"It's not a waste of time. I'd do this for anyone," she affirmed, determined.

"Even for Aegon?" he asked.

"I adore my cousin Aegon, but he can be a bit of an idiot. He doesn't deserve my attention. But I'd do it for Helaena, for Aemond, for Lucerys, even for little Joffrey when he stops being a newborn and can eat solids."

"And for me?" Lorcan inquired.

"I'd do nothing less than the best for you, dear Blackwood. Though you're a bit picky with food, always preferring mashed potatoes with lamb or beef," she laughed.

"Liar, I occasionally eat duck too," he protested, though with a knowing smile.

"Are you calling your princess a liar?" she joked, and he huffed in defeat.

When they reached her cousin's chambers, Princess Rhaenyra, Nathaerys handed the lemon pie to Lorcan so she could adjust her dress and the long white braids adorned with rubies. Lorcan rolled his eyes, watching with barely concealed disdain the eldest son of Rhaenyra, whom he found obnoxious and arrogant compared to Nathaerys' sweetness.

The guard at the entrance announced the arrival of the princess.

"Princess Nathaerys Targaryen, daughter of Prince Neysarion."

"Thaerys, dear," greeted her cousin, Rhaenyra, with a warm smile.

"Nyra," she responded, bowing gracefully.

"What do you have here, dear?" Rhaenyra asked, approaching with little Joffrey in her arms.

"It's a lemon pie," she said nervously before taking a breath. "I know it's Jacaerys' favorite. I convinced the queen to let me help in the kitchen to make it myself."

The elder smiled sweetly at the tenderness and good intentions of her young cousin.

"You heard that, right?" she addressed her son, who was with Ser Harwin.
