Hadassah woke up to a faint glow that filled her room. She blinked, her eyes adjusting to the soft light. As her vision cleared, she saw two figures standing at the foot of her bed. Leah, the mischievous Fae Queen, and her husband, the Fae King, who radiated an ethereal presence.
Leah's eyes sparkled with mischief as she grinned down at Hadassah. "Well, well, sleeping beauty finally awakens," she said playfully.
Hadassah sat up slowly, wincing at the pain from her barely healing wounds. "Leah, what are you doing here?" she asked, her voice hoarse.
Leah shrugged, her tone light. "Your little mermaid boy asked for a favor." She sat at the edge of the bed, grimacing after looking at Hadassah closely. "You look awful."
Hadassah's eye twitched. She didn't need to be told that. She was aware of how pathetic she looked, especially after insisting on coming to Nephel to find Ahqi after she woke up. "What did he request?"
Leah's grin widened. "He asked for the location of the Mother of Ferals."
Hadassah furrowed her brows for a second before her face relaxed in understanding. "He wants to find her to gain her support," she muttered, thinking aloud. The Mother of Ferals was someone Hadassah had heard about from so many people; she was well aware of the rumors, her unnatural strength, and the fact she had been missing for a century. "We need to work out a deal, that mermaid is yours, right?" Leah said, her tone implying their relationship was more than just friends.
Hadassah felt like they were more than just friends by this point, but they hadn't clarified, so she could only awkwardly accept the fae queen's teasing. "I took the ferals under my servitude. If the Feral Queen is found, I want you to promise not to take them back."
Hadassah nodded slowly. "I don't care for the ferals. They're not my concern." Why would she take them back? Ferals were hard to contain and train. Leah was perfectly fine handling them because she herself was a brute.
Leah's eyes narrowed slightly. "This applies to Rahn as well."
Hadassah's expression hardened. "What are you talking about?" She had purposely avoided Atlas ever since she woke up. She did not know how she would feel seeing the child she found turn into a monster.
Leah explained, "Ferals congregate around the powerful, including Harbingers. Make sure Rahn doesn't interfere."
Hadassah nodded, understanding the implications. "Agreed."
Leah smiled, satisfied. "The Feral Queen went into hiding in the graveyard of the colossals." She stood up and walked toward her husband. "You should be able to find her if you search there."
Hadassah cursed internally. "That's all the way north of the continent. How am I supposed to get there?" She did not have wings; she could not fly, and it was also too difficult to sneak out of Nephel. It was hard to get in here in the first place.
"The Imperial wedding is set for autumn. You'll have three weeks where you won't be remembered, since concubines can't partake in imperial weddings."
Hadassah nodded, the plan forming in her mind. "But what about Ahqi? Drucilla is an enchanter. The shackles on his feet can't be broken easily, and I don't have the power."
Leah's expression turned serious. "There is only one way."
Hadassah's eyes widened in horror. "You can't mean—"
Leah interrupted, "Do you have a choice? Even now, you're bleeding from the whip against your back. Ahqi's feet will grow back if they're cut off. He's a mermaid, not human." Her words had a hint of frustration; she felt Hadassah did not care enough for her mortality. Why did she care for a celestial? Ahqi would not die no matter what he did due to his status, but Hadassah had already died once.
