Rhea stood at the edge of her tree house, looking out over the expansive forest below. She didn't really know how long she had been staring absentmindedly at the greenery or how what she was thinking about. It felt like a far distant memory, a dance maybe, snow? She tried to sort out her memories but the more she tried the less she could fully grasp them. She had a daughter didn't she?

"Are you thinking about Dad?" Cain asked softly, his voice tinged with an odd feeling that could only be described as hope.

Rhea turned to him, her expression unreadable. "Who?" she asked, her tone devoid of emotion.

Cain's heart sank at her response, the hope in his eyes had been snuffed away. "No one," he said, trying to mask his disappointment. "Come inside, I made dinner."

She looked at her son for a moment, she looked so much like his father, but somehow she didn't quite remember his face, or his name. She must have loved him a lot to give him a child.

...Did I love you?

It felt like a pointless question to ask now; however many mates she had, they were all gone now. She was the only one left, but at least she was sure they loved her, because she was selfish. She was never one to give her heart to anyone first, unless she was sure they would never break it.

Right?

She wanted to believe that, but considering the gaping scar going across her chest she did not know who it was that came close enough to her heart to betray her.

Verena jumped as her door slammed open. She spun around, ready to reprimand whoever dared to enter without permission, only to see Hadassah. Before she could even gather her thoughts, Hadassah rushed to her side and grabbed her hand, dragging her out of the room.

"What's happening?" Verena asked, her voice tinged with fear and confusion.

"If you keep sitting in your room, you'll miss everything. You need to walk around more!" Hadassah scolded her, determination evident in her tone. She had overheard that General Vortigern was meeting with the prince and had rushed to get Verena so they could eavesdrop together.

Ren, her attendant, raised an eyebrow as they hurried past him. "Off to cause trouble, your Highness?" he quipped, a playful smirk on his face.

Hadassah shot him a quick glare. "Keep watch, Ren. Make sure no one sees us."

Ren chuckled, shaking his head. "As you wish, your Highness. Try not to get caught."

They crept through the palace corridors, their footsteps light and cautious. Hadassah led Verena to a side room adjacent to the war room, where they could listen in on the discussions. The room was elegantly furnished with plush cushions and a low table set for tea. Hadassah gestured for Verena to sit, and they settled into the comfortable chairs.

"Why are we here?" Verena asked, her curiosity piqued.

Hadassah poured tea into delicate porcelain cups, running around like that had made her quite parched. "We are here to listen," she replied calmly. "It's important for you to understand the strategies and plans. You are not just a bystander in this war, Verena. You have a role to play."

Verena sipped her tea, the warm liquid soothing her nerves a little, she was a bit scared to be so close to such important information, her hands shook a little as she heard the men start talking.

Hadassah smiled, trying to calm her down. "It's fine, even if we get caught at most they'll ground us."

Only then did Verena calm down, they settled in, the soft murmur of voices from the war room filtering through the walls. Hadassah and Verena sat close, sharing quiet whispers and the occasional giggle as they eavesdropped.
