Just as they had agreed on the couple left for the airport in different cars, arriving on different times at the gate. Oscar worked his way through security as the last passenger, as the employee told him.
When he was all clear and ready to meet his friends a wave of nervousness rolled over him. He wasn't so sure about their plan to not tell their friends right away. Lanod at least would look right though him. The other McLaren driver knew them both very well an knew when either he or Carlos were lying.
The man was so deep in thoughts that he wasn't watching were he was going, but it ended very abruptly. He felt a warm body against his before stumbling backwards "Ah" The Ausie caught himself before he could fell completely.
When he was steady on his legs Oscar looked up, meeting big brown eyes "Oh Carlos, sorry mate didn't see you there." He heard his own voice trembling. His head screeched "Now they know, you sound so unbelievable" But the Spaniard smiled brightly "Morning Mate, already planning you next home race?"
That got the group attention. Lando and Alex laughed. The older McLaren driver nodded "He did, in an interview he claimed it as well." Alex next to him giggled "At least you didn't need someone to adopt you this time."
Oscar rolled his eyes at both of them "Please, I am living there so it IS my home race." Max laughed with eh rest of them "That's one way to see it. Lets see if it helps you in the race as well as it did in Monaco."
Just then a flight attendant came to the group, informing Max that his plane was ready for boarding now. As they all picked up the backpacks and little carryon's, used Carlos the distraction so secretly stroke through Oscars hair.
It was a quiet, small gesture, but it calmed the younger man tremendous. He smiled warmly at the Spaniard before Lando demanded their attention again.
On board Carlos and Oscar found themselves seated across from each other. The room buzzed with laughter and the friends unwinding after a long weekend. Max was in the middle of recounting a particularly amusing incident from a race he had years ago, drawing chuckles from Lando and Alex.
Carlos shifted subtly in his seat, his foot nudging Oscar's under the table. Oscar glanced up, meeting Carlos's gaze with a mix of surprise and delight. Carlos's lips curved into a mischievous smile, his dark eyes sparkling with playful intent.
Oscar, trying to maintain a neutral expression, nudged Carlos's foot back, the subtle contact sending a thrill through him. Carlos's smile widened, his fingers tapping a casual rhythm on the table, but his eyes never left Oscar's.
Max, oblivious to the silent exchange, continued his story with animated gestures. "And then the mechanic realized he was holding the wrong tire! Can you believe that?"
Lando burst out laughing. "Sounds like something straight out of a comedy sketch!"
Alex chuckled along, shaking his head. "Only in Formula 1, right?"
Carlos leaned back, stretching his arm behind his chair, and let his fingers brush lightly against the back of Oscar's hand. The touch was fleeting but enough to send a shiver down Oscar's spine. Oscar bit his lip, his heart racing, and shifted his hand slightly to allow Carlos's fingers to intertwine with his for a moment.
Lando, who was sitting next to Oscar, turned to him with a curious look. "Hey, Oz, you alright? You seem a bit spaced out."
Oscar cleared his throat, forcing a casual laugh. "Yeah, just thinking about the strategy for the weekend. You know how it is."
Lando nodded, seemingly satisfied with the answer, and turned back to Max, who was already launching into another tale. Oscar exhaled a quiet sigh of relief, his eyes flicking back to Carlos.
The Spaniard gave him a reassuring smile, his eyes softening with affection. He mouthed silently, "You okay?"
Oscar nodded, his own smile growing. He mouthed back, "Yeah, just... excited."
Carlos's eyes twinkled with understanding. "Me too," he mouthed, his fingers drumming lightly on the table in a rhythm that Oscar recognized as their secret code—three taps, pause, three taps—a silent declaration of his feelings and assurance. They came up with this system shortly before the flight as Oscar got more and more tense.
Oscar's heart swelled, and he returned the code with a subtle tap of his own fingers against his thigh. The unspoken words hung in the air between them, a promise and a reassurance that they were in this together.
The conversation continued around them, with Max moving on to another story and the room filling with laughter once more. But for Carlos and Oscar, the real dialogue was happening beneath the surface, in the stolen touches and secret glances that spoke volumes more than words ever could.
Oscar bit his lip, trying to suppress a smile as Carlos's foot lightly traced along his ankle. He glanced around the room, making sure no one else noticed their interaction. Lando and Alex were engrossed in Max's story, their attention fully diverted.
Carlos, emboldened by Oscar's responsiveness, let his fingers trail up Oscar's arm, a gesture so subtle it could be mistaken for an absent-minded movement. Oscar's breath hitched, and he cast a quick look at Carlos, who met his gaze with a playful wink.
After the little plane had safely landed, the group decided got up and out. They all stood to leave at the gate of the airport, stretching and exchanging casual goodbyes. Max clapped Carlos on the shoulder. "Good luck on Sunday, mate."
Carlos grinned. "You too, Max. Let's make it a good one."
Lando and Alex echoed similar sentiments, and the group began to disperse. Carlos lingered near the door, waiting for Oscar. When the others had turned their backs, he leaned in close, his voice a soft murmur. "See you in a bit?"
Oscar nodded, a smile playing on his lips. "Definitely."
They shared a brief, meaningful look before Carlos slipped out the door. Oscar took a deep breath, his heart still racing from the night's secret interactions. As he followed the others out, he felt a sense of exhilaration and anticipation for what was to come.
