Moselle

The world around me melted away. Namor and Shuri along with it. The sky and field around me dripped away like wax on a lit candle until a new place emerged.

The village. The one that was on fire in my dreams and people screaming death. Only there was no fire or darkness.

The day was warm and the sounds of children laughing and playing while the adults worked collecting palm leaves. Men were fishing in the shallow reefs and women were tending their homes. Smells of spices and smoke filled the air.

Cizin stands beside me and nods her head forward in a silent command. I walked toward the center of the village where children ran past me like I wasn't there. Elders conversed outside of huts and women and young girls hung livestock from string to dry out.

A women emerged from one of the huts holding her swollen belly while a man exited after her, tenderly holding her hand and wrapping a protective arm around her. The woman was breathing rapidly like she was trying to control her pain.

I looked to Cizin and she nodded her head toward the couple for me to follow. I did.

The man brought the pregnant women to a hut and a medicine women instructed him to lie her down. When he did he didn't let go of her hand and pressed his forehead to hers. I watched as the couple closed their eyes and breathed each other in, like this may be their last time seeing each other.

The medicine women called out and two more women showed up with bowls of water and rags. The medicine women kneeled down by the feet of the pregnant women and spread her legs. I couldn't understand what they were saying but the pregnant women nodded her head and began pushing. Her cries of pain filled the air along with the medicine women yelling for her to what I can only assume was push. The pregnant women did. Again, and again and again. The man never taking his eyes off her.

Finally, what seemed like eternity a baby's cry filled the room. I looked down to see the medicine women hold up a small pale baby girl. I sucked in a breath. The baby was me.

The medicine women handed the child off to the mother and father and all I could do was watch as they; smiled.

I looked to Cizin and finally she spoke.

"The mother never died at birth like Itzama told you."

"Why would he lie?" I asked.

"Because he didn't want you to see." Cizin answered with no tone to her voice.

I hesitated but I needed to know. "See what?"

Just as quickly as the words left my mouth the happy scene of the new parents holding their baby girl, changed to the scene of horror

Just as quickly as the words left my mouth the happy scene of the new parents holding their baby girl, changed to the scene of horror. The room was empty but the scream coming from outside were death curdling. I ran out of the hut and was met with flames and bodies of men, women and children scattered all around. People screamed in terror and ran into the cover of the dark jungle. Injured people were left to their demise.
