today was a busy morning in luke's diner. it was only charlie and luke serving and it was packed. charlie had only been there 20 minutes and she was already exhausted. she saw the gilmore girls sat at the counter so she went to join them hoping luke didn't see.

"it sucks tell me it suck" rory fretted to her mum.

"rory whatever you've written im sure does not suck" charlie replied leaning over the girl to get more engaged in the conversation but then she saw luke coming. "guys hide me!"

"coffee, coffee" luke said while filling their cups up. "okay what do you want, eggs, toast?"

"what's the rush there zippy" lorelai questions still trying to hide the blonde.

"i was supposed to have extra help today, but i don't" the diner owner grumbled then turning his gaze to charlie. "and charlie isn't helping much, so place your order"

"pancakes"
"french toast"
"pancakes for me as well"

"charlie you are working no pancakes for you until you've finished" luke demands and the girl quickly gets up and starts taking people's orders.

charlie loved working at luke's. most of the time it was just talking with the townspeople with a side of working. however she didn't love sharing her role with jess and he had just come downstairs wearing the ugliest shirt she had ever seen.

"jess you were supposed to be down here-" luke cuts himself off looking down at jess' t-shirt. "what the hell is that?"

"what"

"that"

"that is a shirt"

"yeah a really ugly shirt" charlie chimes in coming behind the counter passing the two arguing.

"change" luke demands again ignoring the girl with her comments.

"why, i like this shirt"

"charlie do you like his shirt?" he asks the girl who was now spectating the pair.

"love the band, terrible shirt and why do you like that shirt?"

"it brings out my eyes" jess replied clenching his jaw.

"oh yes i can see the little sparkle right there" charlie says her voice dipping with sarcasm while pointing to his eye almost accidentally poking it before jess swats her hand away.

jess then goes upstairs to change but charlie doesn't think he'll come back down.

"i bet $10 he doesn't come back down in this hour."

charlie walked in the diner after school and slumped on the counter putting her head in her hands.

"luke i need a cup of coffee" charlie groaned.

"you work here come get it" luke said while giving kirk his eggs and bacon.

charlie decided to work the later shift so that she didn't have to be at home by herself the whole night and could stay at luke's until close.

"hey luke, is it just me working till close tonight?" the girl questioned hoping for a quiet night.

"no jess is as well, he stole a gnome from babette so im making him work till close."

"no, not pierpon" charlie gasps with a giggle seeing that the teenage boy just walked in. "i can't believe you stole pierpon"

"yeah well i gave it back so it's not stolen anymore" jess argued back sounding more grumpy that usual, making his way up to the apartment.

"why's he got a stick up his ass" the girl questioned luke but luke just shrugged his shoulders.

"hey kid why don't you go back to your house, your shift doesn't start for another 3 hours" luke asked the girl who was worried for. she looked like she hadn't gotten any sleep for the past two days. the truth was that charlie found it very difficult to sleep especially with her mum gone but even with her home she doesn't sleep as much as should.

"oh okay, yeah sure" charlie stammered not wanting to be a burden and a pain as she was taking up a table.

"get some sleep" luke called to her as she walked out the door and all charlie did was stick her thumb up.

it was now three hours later and charlie's shift was supposed to be starting however charlie was 1 bottle of vodka down. she had absolutely crumbled as soon as she hit her front door. now she had to go to luke's and try to hide that she wasn't the slightest bit sober and the fact she was 30 minutes late, luckily it was dead in there.

"charlie where have you been i was worried" luke exclaimed when she walked in trying not to stumble up the steps.

charlie just smiled and went to get a cloth to clean the tables.

"what's wrong with london over there" jess observed noticing that she was unsteady on her feet.

the pair of them were staring at the girl both coming to a realisation of what had happened.

"jess get charlie a big glass of water please and then help her upstairs" luke asked jess knowing how to help her as she had turned up many times like this on his doorstep and he cursed himself for letting her do it again.

jess went to the kitchen and luke tried to get her to talk.

"charlie why did you do this again" the man tried to get her to talk while holding her up.

"lonely" she sniffed as sadness clouded her features. "my mum left me, i miss her"

jess came back and took charlie's other arm and took her from his uncle. he wrapped an arm around her waist helping her stand with stability and making their way to the stairs.

once they were upstairs jess laid charlie down and put her on her side in the recovery position just in case she did throw up.

"god london, why did you do this you reek of alcohol" jess complained.

"jess put on luke's shirt and cap, he'll be mad but it will be so funny" charlie slurred while giggling thinking how jess would look with luke's signature outfit.

so that's exactly what jess did to make the drunken girl happy and then he went downstairs to let her sleep on his bed and not thinking about where he would spend the night.
