The bell rang, signaling the end of the break. The students, still animated by their conversations, returned to their seats. Shortly after, an elegant woman entered the room. She wore a perfectly tailored black suit and exuded an aura of professionalism and rigor. She positioned herself in front of the desk, scanning the class with a sharp gaze before beginning her introduction.
"Good morning, everyone. I am Sae Chiyabashira, your homeroom teacher and the person in charge of Class D this year. I will also be teaching Japanese history. Over the next three years, I hope to get to know all of you."
Ayaki listened attentively, but deep down, she already knew that Chiyabashira-sensei wouldn't reveal everything there was to know. Ayaki was well-versed in the story and recalled that the school often kept important information from the students.
Chiyabashira-sensei continued, pulling out a stack of documents from her bag. "I will now distribute the special rules of this school. In this institution, students must live on campus and are not allowed to have contact with the outside world. Leaving the premises is strictly forbidden. That said, the campus is vast and offers numerous activities, such as karaoke, cinemas, and restaurants. The campus covers 600,000 square meters, so you'll have plenty to do."
The students exchanged glances, some excited, others a bit worried. The idea of staying on campus all the time was a new experience for many. However, Ayaki knew that these entertainment facilities were more of a facade than anything else.
Chiyabashira-sensei then moved on to the next point. "Now, let's talk about the S System." She took out a stack of cards and began distributing them. "These are your student ID cards. You can use them to purchase anything on campus. However, be mindful of how you manage your points, as they are equivalent to money."
The class listened intently, some students beginning to grasp the importance of these cards.
"Points are credited on the first day of each month. Each of you already has 100,000 points on your card. One point is equivalent to one yen. For now, that should suffice as an explanation."
At this announcement, the reactions in the class were lively. Murmurs spread through the room as the students processed the information.
"100,000 points? That's amazing!" exclaimed one student, visibly excited.
"It's like having a free credit card!" added another.
Ayaki, while maintaining an interested expression, knew there was much more to discover about the S System. She was aware that Chiyabashira-sensei wasn't revealing the whole truth and that the system's rules were far more complex than they seemed.
Kushida, always smiling, appeared curious and enthusiastic. Karuizawa and Sato, too, were caught up in the excitement of discovering the possibilities offered by these points. Sudo, on the other hand, seemed indifferent, but Ayaki could guess that he was already thinking about how to best take advantage of this new situation.
As for Kiyotaka, he remained silent and impassive, observing the scene with his usual calm demeanor. Ayaki knew he had probably already understood that the S System was a subtle mechanism and that it would be wise not to spend everything recklessly.
The class reacted with enthusiasm to the announcement about the points and cards, unaware that this system went far beyond mere financial transactions. Ayaki, meanwhile, was mentally preparing to navigate these murky waters, aware that the true nature of this school was yet to be uncovered.
Chiyabashira spoke up again, gazing at the students with a slight smile. "Are you surprised by the number of points distributed?" she asked.
Without waiting for a response, she continued, her tone becoming more serious. "This school measures students' abilities. All those who passed the entrance exam have demonstrated a certain level of merit and value. The amount of money given reflects your skills. Use it wisely. After graduation, the points will be reclaimed, so there's no point in accumulating them. It's up to you to decide how to spend them. Use the money for what you enjoy."
She paused, looking carefully at each student, as if to gauge their reactions. "You can always transfer your points to someone else, but it is strictly forbidden to use intimidation to obtain points. The school is very strict about bullying and will enforce severe sanctions."
Ayaki noted the gravity in Chiyabashira-sensei's voice on this last point. She looked around the room, her eyes searching for signs of understanding or concern among the students. The class was silent, each student contemplating what these rules meant for their daily lives and interactions with others.
Chiyabashira-sensei observed the students with a slight smile. "It seems no one has any questions," she stated.
But Ayaki raised her hand, capturing the attention of the entire class and the teacher. "Excuse me," she said calmly, "but 100,000 points per person per month is a huge amount, even for the government."
A silence followed her remark, before a few murmurs arose in the class. The students exchanged perplexed or surprised glances, some whispering among themselves. Ayaki continued, more confident.
"I think we should be careful with our behavior in class and limit our spending. I have doubts about this system, and I fear we haven't been told everything. If I'm wrong, I promise to pay for whatever each student wants to make up for the trouble."
At these words, the class erupted into louder discussions. Some students turned to Ayaki with disapproving looks. Sudo, particularly irritated, turned to her and growled.
"Are you kidding me?" he exclaimed, visibly annoyed. "We finally have a chance to enjoy ourselves, and you want us to hold back? Aren't you being a little paranoid?"
Karuizawa chimed in, raising her eyebrows in a haughty manner. "Honestly, who cares about what you think? If you want to deprive yourself, that's your problem. But don't impose your doubts on us."
Ike added with a laugh, "Yeah, chill out. We don't need to act all paranoid. It's not like we're going to lose everything, right?"
Despite the hostility of these reactions, Ayaki remained calm, simply looking at them without responding. She knew they didn't yet understand the implications of their actions. Kushida, sitting near Karuizawa, tried to calm the situation, though her voice betrayed a slight concern.
"Come on, come on," she said with a smile, "it's just a suggestion, nothing more. Ayaki is just trying to warn us. Maybe we should listen, just in case."
Chiyabashira-sensei watched them with growing interest but remained silent, observing the students' reactions. Ayaki knew she had done what she could. The rest would depend on their choices and the consequences to come.
Ayaki sat back down, aware that her words would likely have no impact on her classmates. She lacked the influence of someone like Kushida or Hirata; if they had spoken, perhaps the others might have listened.
Deciding not to push further, she chose to remain silent. At that moment, she felt Ayanokoji and Horikita's gaze on her. They looked at her for a moment, then turned their eyes away without saying a word. It was as if they were taking note of her intervention but had no intention of reacting openly.
Ayaki wondered if they also had doubts about the system or if they were simply observing. She knew that the real challenge was just beginning, and that the unfolding events would reveal much about her classmates and herself.
