Ayaki was walking quickly along the school path, her mind still wrapped up in the events of the previous day. She hadn't slept much, too preoccupied with the exam and, most importantly, the consequences that would follow. The sky was slightly overcast, with rays of sunlight timidly piercing through the clouds, creating a muted atmosphere. As she walked, she noticed a familiar figure ahead of her, walking at his usual pace, unhurried. It was Ayanokoji.
Taking a deep breath, Ayaki quickened her pace to catch up with him. When she reached his side, she hesitated for a moment before speaking.
"Hi, Ayanokoji," she said softly, her hands trembling slightly.
He turned his head toward her, his eyes as inscrutable as ever.
"Hi," he responded simply.
"Can I walk with you?" she asked, trying to sound casual.
He nodded without a word, accepting her company. They continued to walk side by side in silence for a few moments, with Ayaki searching for words to start a conversation. She knew she needed to say something meaningful, something that didn't sound like mere small talk.
"I've been thinking about everything that's happening lately," she began cautiously. "The competition between classes, the strategies everyone's using... it all seems so calculated, almost inhuman."
Ayanokoji didn't respond immediately, letting the silence settle between them once again. Finally, he spoke, his voice calm and measured.
"It's no different from society in general. Here, we're just exposed to this reality a little earlier."
Ayaki looked at him, slightly surprised by his response.
"You mean everything we do here is just training for what awaits us outside?" she asked, a hint of bitterness in her voice.
"In a way," he replied, shrugging slightly. "The methods may be extreme, but the goal remains the same. Those who can adapt and manipulate situations in their favor will succeed, the others will fail."
Ayaki felt a shiver run down her spine. She knew Ayanokoji had a unique perspective on the world, but hearing him say this so nonchalantly always unsettled her.
"And you, do you do all this to succeed?" she asked, trying to understand his motivations.
He didn't respond right away, his eyes fixed on the path ahead of them. Then, after a moment of reflection, he answered.
"I do what's necessary to achieve my objectives. Nothing more, nothing less."
That enigmatic answer left Ayaki perplexed. She had always known Ayanokoji was hard to figure out, but the more time she spent with him, the more she realized she had only scratched the surface of his personality.
"And those objectives, what are they?" she asked, trying to learn more.
He turned his head slightly towards her, his eyes narrowing slightly as if evaluating the situation.
"That's not something I share easily," he finally said.
Ayaki nodded, respecting his reserve. She knew he wouldn't reveal anything unless he deemed it necessary.
They soon arrived at school, and the conversation naturally died down. Entering their classroom, they each took their seats. The tension in the room was palpable; the exam had put everyone on edge, and the results were about to be revealed.
Chiyabashira-sensei entered the room, her usual expression, a mix of severity and indifference, plastered on her face. Hirata, always concerned for his classmates' well-being, spoke up.
