CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE ❛ a miracle ❜
"I HOPE YOU had a good time, Bakugo. I know my parents can talk a whole lot." You walked alongside the blonde, heading back toward the UA dormitories. The sun was beginning to set, and you were about halfway to your destination. The dinner went better than expected— sure, your dad bombarded Bakugo with a shit-load of questions, but your parents took a liking to him in the end. You were definitely caught off guard by that— nobody ever takes a liking to Bakugo.
"It wasn't bad." Bakugo responded, shoving his hands into his pockets as he stared ahead. "The food was good, I like spicy curry." Peeking at him from the corner of your eye, you couldn't help but admire the blonde. Bakugo, the king of assholes, actually did his best to leave a good impression on your family. He held back the usual profanity, as well as his short fuse. Your mother asked him to come by and cook sometime, and much to your surprise, he agreed. It seemed that the dinner really did improve his mood. Your lips curled into an appreciative smile, and you thought to yourself— you didn't mind him pretending to be your boyfriend for just a little bit longer.
"What're you staring at?" He questioned, turning his head toward you. He furrowed his brow. "What, something on my face?" The two of you stared at one another, before you looked away. Your face was burning up with embarrassment. Bringing your hands to your face, you cupped your burning cheeks. What were you even thinking?! You couldn't keep dragging this on, especially after what happened with Todoroki. Fuck, why was your heart beating so fast?! You puffed your cheeks, deciding to change the subject.
"Why'd you tell my parents that you were my boyfriend?" You suddenly asked, taking Bakugo by surprise. "The plan should've been over a while ago. Besides, my parents weren't even included in the plan." He didn't know how to respond. Bakugo could feel his heart beating a mile a minute. He cursed under his breath, hating that he felt this way. The butterflies that danced around his stomach made him feel sick— he felt like puking. Why'd you have to go and make him all flustered?! Bakugo would've never imagined himself in a state like this— blushing like a teenage girl in love. It pissed him off.
"I don't—" Before he could respond, a movement behind you caught his attention. "Shit, watch out!" Bakugo acted quickly, shoving you to the ground. You fell forward, sliding roughly across the concrete. Cursing, you grabbed onto your aching legs, blood seeping from the wounds.
"What the fuck, Bakugo?!" Your head spun to face the blonde, only to be met with a horrific scene. Your previous kidnapper, Puppeteer, stood menacingly under a nearby street light. He had wrapped his deadly strings around Bakugo's body. He pulled the blonde toward him, watching in excitement as he desperately clawed at the strings around his neck. He got a kick out of watching his victims struggle. There must've been poison within the strings due to how quickly Bakugo was losing his strength.
"The tracker we implanted in your neck worked wonders." Puppeteer cackled sadistically, staring you down with crazy, blood-shot eyes. "When I'm done cutting up your boyfriend, I'll be sure to slice your neck deep enough to pull the tracker back out." You slapped a hand against your neck, frozen with fear. They were tracking you the entire time?! You looked back down at Bakugo, whose lips were beginning to turn a light shade of blue. Blood seeped from the threads that dug deeper into his skin with every second that passed. With that sight, you felt your body move on its own.
Rushing forward, you reached out toward the attacker, letting out a battle cry. White threads shot out from his body, heading full-speed toward you with full intent to kill. You weren't sure what your plan was, but you couldn't sit back and let Bakugo die. Large bursts of flames began to overtake the scene, scorching the puppet strings he controlled into a crisp. Bakugo was freed, gasping for air as he held onto his stinging neck. He was disoriented, but one thing was for certain— those weren't his flames. His eyes trailed down toward your hand, which emitted large gusts of flames.
"My quirk— it's back?!" You stared down at your hand in complete shock, before balling your hand into a fist. "My quirk is back!!" Before Puppeteer could react, you took out the villain with a single fiery uppercut, knocking him clean off his feet. Puppeteer flew backwards, colliding violently into a nearby dumpster. He sunk within a pile of trash bags, losing consciousness from the impact. Forgetting about the villain, you ran toward Bakugo, stooping down to his level. His body was limp, but he was still conscious. You grasped his face, turning his head to check for any more injuries.
"Are you okay?!" You grazed your hand over his face, as well as his neck. Thankfully, the threads that bound him only left shallow wounds on his body. The injuries weren't as serious as you had thought. The poison paralyzed his body for a short amount of time. Now, he was slowly gaining movement back. "Katsuki, your face is burning up!!" Bakugo stared back at you, unable to speak. It wasn't from the poison— he was too flustered to respond. He'd never been this close to you before, and feeling your hands roam his body made him forget how to act. He slowly sat up, taking a hold of your wrists. You both sat face-to-face, yet no words were exchanged. It was silent, before Bakugo finally spoke up, offering a faint smile.
"You got your quirk back." You let out a gentle laugh, nodding your head in excitement. Without thinking, you wrapped your arms around Bakugo, hugging him tightly. He patted your back, pulling you close.
"Let's head back to UA."
☆彡
After heading back to the UA dormitory, you and Bakugo informed Aizawa of the situation at hand. Wasting no time, a group of pro-heroes were sent to retrieve the villain, arresting him immediately. You were taken in by Recovery Girl, who ran multiple tests to locate this supposed tracker. After an excruciating wait, the tracker was located and removed. The device was taken into custody by the pro-heroes, who planned to trace it back to the villains responsible.
Bakugo was evaluated by Recovery Girl, and the pro-hero concluded that the amount of poison used in the attack didn't have any lasting effects. If it had taken even five more minutes to destroy the threads, Bakugo could've been seriously injured— or even worse.
"God, I'm so glad you're okay!!" As you entered the 1-A dormitory, you were tackled by Mina and Uraraka, who both enveloped you into a tight hug. "You got your quirk back?!"
"You holding up alright, bro?" Kirishima approached Bakugo, exchanging a fist-bump with the blonde. Bakugo nodded silently before heading in the direction of his room, refusing to answer any questions. You stared, ignoring your classmates that bombarded you with questions as you watched Bakugo disappear around the corner. Even though Bakugo was safe, it bothered you to see the bandages that littered his body. Although you wanted to give Bakugo some space, you longed to be at his side, his presence giving you a sense of comfort. Little did you know, a certain ex of yours watched you from the sidelines. He was ecstatic that you had your quirk again, but he took notice of how you looked at Bakugo. He felt his chest tighten— he assumed the rumors about the two of you were untrue, but it seems he was wrong. The way you looked at Bakugo reminded him of how you used to look at him. He knew he'd have to come clean about how he truly felt before it was too late.
