THE CLAN fell into an oppressive silence. Rogue's heart skipped a beat; she hadn't had any inkling that Rachel would offer herself as the martyr. A mix of panic and an intense, protective anger welled up inside her.

She looked around the room, searching the faces of the Jailers, hoping to see someone, anyone, refute Rachel's sacrifice. But no one did. The weight of their collective silence pressed down on her, and she felt a surge of desperation.

Before she fully realised what she was doing, Rogue stood up, her movements almost involuntary. All eyes turned to her. She couldn't let this happen.

She crossed the Calling in a few quick strides, her hand reaching out to grab Rachel by the arm. With a firm grip, she practically dragged her friend from the circle, pulling her a few years out from the gathering.

'Haven't you done enough, Rachel?' Rogue said, her frustration evident despite her hushed tone.
Rachel's eyes pleaded with her. 'You have to believe me, Ro. It's the only way out. We were meant to do this.'

Rogue leaned in, her whisper sharp. 'Oh, I believe you. Yeah — great plan you have. I especially loved the bit where you volunteered to kill yourself.'
'You don't get it. This might be the only way,' Rachel replied, resolute.

'Oh my—' Rogue's irritation flared. 'You think you're so noble, so incredibly heroic. But you're not. You're an idiot, Rachel. You're an idiot if you think this is the only way.'

Rachel's gaze hardened. 'I have plenty of my own reasons. In many ways, it's my fault we're all here. You're the idiot if you think I'm not going. Actually, you're the idiot if you think you're not going. I know you want this too.'

Rogue scoffed. 'Listen, if you really did design the Maze, you don't need to kill yourself about it. You were a kid. You still are — we all are. You can't help what what they forced you to do.'
Rachel's eyes seemed to soften. 'I just... I feel like I need to save everyone. I need to redeem myself.'

Rogue stepped back, shaking her head. 'I believe you, I really do. But I'm not going to let you die, Rachel. Not after everything you've done for us, and, well.... me. You understand?'

They shared a sincere, prolonged look. Rachel nodded. 'I understand. I'm sorry. I was just trying to make a point. The point that... if someone's going to die every night anyway, we might as well use it to our advantage.'
Rogue nodded too. 'Okay. Yeah, you're right... I'm sorry too.'

Rachel took a deep breath. 'I'm going back in. And if I can convince those... sticks, we should do it tonight, before anyone else gets hurt.'
Before Rogue could form a response, Rachel had disappeared back into the Calling.
