Gosh I was bored, it was my first week on the job and unfortunately I had been assigned a partner who was insanely boring. She hated getting called into crime scenes and loved parking tickets. She was smart and could easily make detective if she wanted, but I knew she never would because of how scared of everything she was.
Still questioning my sanity and how she became a cop I heard a call come over the radio. "This is Jay Halstead with intelligence i need immediate backup to my location now!" No freaking way! Finally some action. As much as my partner was terrified she surely knew we couldn't leave the detective on his own. We were the closest unit to his location so she had to answer. Right? Wrong.
"Come on girl! He needs help! We are the closest to him we have to help!" I yelled at my apparently idiotic partner. "I... I can't. He's a detective and he can handle it." Are you kidding!?!
"Fine I'll help him alone!" I yelled as I opened the door and ran. His location wasn't far only a block or three. His best and right now only option of help was me.
Once I got near the location I drew my gun and was ready to shoot. I got closer and saw a suspect shooting at a car, I quickly realized that he was shooting at the detective. I was behind the suspect so I fired a warning shot just beside his leg. Probably not my best move.
"Chicago PD! Put your weapon down!" He was now pissed to say the least. He decided to charge towards me which was not his best move as he was shot and dropped to the ground the moment the detective saw his chance.
Just then I was pushed down and the second suspect ran off. Not thinking I ran after, hearing the detective yelling at me to wait. Obviously I didn't. I caught up to the guy and tackled him to the ground, that's unfortunately when I realized he was armed with a gun and knife.
He swung the knife at my face grazing me, I took his gun and threw it as far behind us as possible. Glad I played softball now. I grabbed his arm slamming it to the ground knocking the knife out. We both got a few punches in but luckily I won.
Our fight ended up with him out like a light. I cuffed him and dragged him to a pole to cuff him there so he couldn't run off. Just before I could another detective came running up to me.
"Damn. Nice work rookie." The man smiled as he took the suspect from me. "nice job kid." An older man said. I followed them back to where the gun fight had started, seeing both suspects had been taken into custody I smiled. I did it. I helped.
"Thanks." I heard a voice from behind say. I turned and saw the detective who originally called for help. "where the hell is your partner?!" I heard an angry voice say. Oh no. I know that voice. It was hard not to know that voice, everyone did even if you were new. Everyone knew Sargent Hank Voight.
"I asked you a question rookie, where the hell is your partner." He was slightly calmer but still pissed. "She was scared to come here Sir." I wasn't about to lie to this guy, and who knew maybe it would get her out to deck duty where she couldn't get herself or anyone else hurt
"Scared?! Tell me what happened now." That wasn't a request that was an order. "Go easy Voight, she did just save my life." The other detective said before walking away.
"Me and my partner were patrolling the area when we heard a call request immediate help. My partner refused so I got out of our squad car and ran here. When I arrived I was behind the suspect and fired a warning shot. He was coming for me when the Detective shot him. I was pushed down by the second suspect and ran after him. I took him down and we fought. He had a gun and a knife both of which I got away from him. That's when the other detectives showed up and took him."
I explained my story hoping it would end well for me. He looked at me then looked behind me. "Halstead!" He yelled. I watched as the detective from before came up to us and looked at his Sargent. "Get her to an ambo and checked out. I'm going to deal with this partner of hers." With that he walked off.
"Nice work. You managed to survive Voight." He laughed. "Names Halstead, Jay Halstead. Nice to meet you." He smiled. We shook hands and he walked me to the ambo. "Seriously, thanks for the help. Don't think I could've lasted much longer without backup." Before I could say anything the paramedic came up to me.
"I'm Gabby, are you okay?" She asked. "I'm fine. Just a graze really." I smiled. "What's your name sweetheart?" She asked as I sat on the edge of the ambo.
"Runner." Jay stated before I could speak. "You can call her Runner." I smiled at the nickname I was given. Gabby looked at me confused but went with it. "Runner huh? I like the sound of that." Jay smiled at me as I spoke.
"keep up the good work and maybe you'll make intelligence one day." He said before walking away. Today was awesome, my first real day as a cop. And I even got a nickname from it.
Can't wait to see what else this job brings.
