G E R M A N Y— SOPHIA SHOOK HER HEAD, it had only been 3 months since she'd come back from Memphis and she was already flunking school. Sophia had only talked to Elvis twice in that time, their conversations on the phone consisted of laughter, pet names and the idea that Sophia would be moving to Graceland in the New Year.
"This isn't like you Sophia." The principal adjusted her glasses on the top of her nose, she slapped the last of Sophia's tests on the table in front of the girl.
Sophie didn't move an inch, she hung her head low and distracted herself with her baby blue skirt. She picked at the skin just below her fingernail, a bad habit she'd developed since being home.
The principal sighed at the lack of response, "Is there something on your mind? Perhaps a family issue?"
Sophia looked up for the first time the whole meeting, she slouched into the arm chair opposite the stern woman.
"No. I'm fine."
"Well these tests say otherwise." She blandly pointed out the large stack of failed test scores.
Sophia bite the soft flesh inside of her mouth, "Can I go now, I'm missing precious class time." She piercing her lips forcing herself not to roll her hazel eyes.
The principal shook her head in disapproval looking at the neat stack of papers. "If you really must. But this will not be the end of it Sophia." She motioned to the thick closed wooden door.
Sophia took that as her cue, since being back Sophia looked rather different than when she'd left. The once clean cut girl was now adorning a new darker look. Sophia had stuck to what Elvis liked and added her own twist, she adorned brown eyeshadow and a thick coat of black mascara, dark liner and a light pink lip combo. She looked more woman than teen.
"Oh and Sophia," the old woman caught Sophia before she left, Sophia turned her head slowly. "If you continue this, you won't be graduating this year."
Sophia didn't say a word, breathing sharply and turning the bronze door knob. The large door opened with a small push, Priscilla sat on the chair next to a younger boy with a large bruise on his face.
"So?" Priscilla tapped her fingers nervously on her legs, her baby blue eyes full of concern and fear. "Did she yell... suspend you?"
"She said I might not graduate this year."
"What!" Priscilla practically jumped out of the seat. The boy beside her gave her a dirty look, "sorry." She smiled, timidly sitting back down.
"It's not a big deal." Sophia shrugged looking down at the floor again, completely disassociated from the situation at hand.
