Kayliah' POV

Kayliah's lithe, mahogany-hued form glided through the darkness with deadly precision. Her every step a testament to her mastery of the shadows. Her raven-black spirals were twisted into a fierce, battle-hardened crown, showcasing her chiseled jawline, sharp cheekbones, and jade green eyes that blazed with an inner inferno, a fierce and unyielding determination that seemed to pierce the very fabric of the shadows. Her pitch-black attire seemed to be woven from the very essence of darkness itself, clinging to her athletic physique like a second skin, accentuating her toned curves and evoking the image of a phantom assassin. As she moved, the soft susurration of black silk and the muted tinkling of tiny, enigmatic trinkets - tiny bones, shimmering feathers, and glinting gemstones - hinted at the mysteries and secrets she kept hidden, like a treasure trove of darkness waiting to be unleashed.

As the darkness descended like a formidable foe, Kayliah's apprehension intensified. She wasn't intimidated by the prospect of battle - her mastery of dark magic was instinctual, honed since childhood. Nor was she concerned about her partner, Kibwe - she was confident in her ability to overpower him if necessary. But Kayliah's unease stemmed from having to feign a power she didn't possess: Power blocking or 'Cerebral Enslavement': the ability to enslave minds, and even take one's powers. A rare and coveted ability wielded only by the most advanced and feared dark witches.

Queen Xylara's expectation of Kayliah mastering Cerebral Enslavement hung over her like a dark cloud, its pressure suffocating. Before that mysterious forest encounter, Kayliah's proficiency lay in controlling the dead and weaving agonizing curses. However, this Cerebral Enslavement had only manifested once, leaving Kayliah uncertain if it was truly hers to wield. Its elusive nature since then only exacerbated her turmoil.

Queen Xylara had summoned Kayliah to the Darkening Glade, a forest located just a brief distance east of the Tenebrous Castle. This foreboding woods was where most dark witches began their training, learning to weave darkness and harness its power. However, they were merely novices, and Kayliah's task was far more daunting.

However, Kayliah had questions and doubts before embarking on her training. She sought a way to feign access to this mysterious power without actually wielding it, a deception that could prove treacherous.

Her quest for answers led her to the Secretarium of Shadows, a repository of knowledge hidden deep within the south-side forest. There, the Umbra Collective held the secrets of Tenebrous, and Kayliah hoped to reveal the truth about her abilities and the true nature of the Cerebral Enslavement.

The sorcerers of Tenebrous rejected the use of books, knowing that their secrets would be compromised as paper and ink inevitably decayed or disappeared over time. To protect their mysteries from prying eyes and the erosive nature of time, three powerful dark witches, Lyraea, Valtira, and Khaosara, crafted a spell of unparalleled might. This ancient incantation captured three shadows from The Under-deep, a realm beyond death, and bound them within a hidden chamber of the Secretarium of Shadows. These shadowy vessels, known collectively as The Umbra Collective, stored the entirety of Tenebrous' history, including prophecies and forbidden knowledge.

As a dark witch, Kayliah shared a unique affinity with her coven, effortlessly communicating with shadowy entities - a skill as natural to them as sun witches harnessing the sun's power. This innate ability ensured the secrets of Tenebrous remained forever concealed from rival covens and protected from the passage of time.

This made Kayliah even more curious about her mother's, Queen Xylara's, desperate pursuit of the mysterious book hidden within the sun kingdom. Since the Umbra Collective already contained the entirety of Tenebrous' history, Kayliah wondered what crucial information the book could possibly hold that her mother needed so urgently. The Queen's willingness to go to great lengths to acquire the book only intensified Kayliah's curiosity, hinting that the book's contents were of paramount importance.

Kayliah ventured into the foreboding forest, its threshold veiled in an unnerving stillness that seemed to swallow all sound. The dense copse of ebony trees, their boughs like bony, arthritic fingers, reached towards the sky with haunting elegance, their limbs bare and lifeless, devoid of even the faintest whisper of foliage. The atmosphere was oppressive, weighed down by the noxious stench of putrescence and mortality, a macabre fragrance that clung to her skin like a damp, sepulchral mantle. Decades past, the trio of dark witches had consecrated this land to the Sanctuary, unleashing a malevolent incantation that had ravaged the forest, leaving behind a desolate, lifeless expanse, a haunting testament to their dark sorcery.
