(Tobin heath and Christen Press)

Tobin Heath sat on the edge of the bed, her fingers tracing the familiar curve of Christen Press's hand as it rested between them. The room was dim, bathed in the soft glow of a single lamp, casting long shadows on the walls. The silence was heavy, punctuated only by the distant hum of the city outside. Yet, within this cocoon of quiet, a storm brewed inside Tobin's heart.

Christen's voice, always so steady, was the anchor Tobin clung to. But tonight, even that couldn't calm the thoughts that swirled in her mind.

"You're all I ever wanted," Tobin whispered, her voice barely audible. It was a truth she had known from the moment they met, but tonight it felt more like a confession.

Christen squeezed her hand gently, her eyes searching Tobin's face. "And you're everything to me," she replied, her voice laced with concern. "What's going on in that head of yours?"

Tobin's gaze drifted to the window, the city lights flickering like distant stars. "I don't know," she admitted, her voice trembling. "I just... I can't shake this feeling. Like, no matter how much you love me, there's this haunting thought that keeps creeping in."

Christen frowned, shifting closer to Tobin. "What do you mean? You know I'm here, right? With you, always."

"I know," Tobin said quickly, turning back to meet Christen's eyes. "But what if... what if something happens? What if one day, you're not here? It's like, there are only two ways this can end, and both of them terrify me."

Christen's eyes softened as she pulled Tobin into a tight embrace. "Nothing's going to happen, Tobin. We're in this together. But what's really going on? Where is this coming from?"

Tobin buried her face in Christen's shoulder, breathing in the comforting scent that was uniquely hers. "I'm just afraid," she admitted, her voice muffled. "Afraid that one day, you'll leave, or I'll lose you. And I don't know how I could go on without you."

Christen held her tighter, her heart aching at the vulnerability in Tobin's voice. "Hey, look at me," she said gently, pulling back just enough to meet Tobin's eyes. "I'm not going anywhere. I promise."

Tobin's eyes glistened with unshed tears. "But that's the thing, Chris. It's a promise you can't make. Everyone leaves eventually, one way or another."

Christen swallowed hard, the weight of Tobin's words settling between them. "I can't promise forever," she said softly, "but I can promise that as long as I'm here, I'll love you with everything I have."

Tobin nodded, her hand clutching Christen's like a lifeline. "And if one of us goes first... I hope it's me. Because I can't imagine learning how to live without you."

Christen's breath hitched at the raw honesty in Tobin's words. "Don't say that," she whispered, her voice breaking. "I couldn't bear to lose you."

"But you'd be stronger," Tobin argued, her eyes pleading for Christen to understand. "You've always been stronger."

Christen shook her head, tears spilling over as she cupped Tobin's face in her hands. "Not without you. Never without you."

Tobin leaned into the touch, closing her eyes as the tears finally escaped. "Maybe if I love you enough," she said, her voice barely above a whisper, "I can break the curse. Maybe we can be in love forever."

Christen pressed her forehead to Tobin's, their tears mingling in the space between them. "We already are," she said softly. "No matter what happens, we'll be in love forever."

The weight of their words hung in the air, a fragile promise in a world that offered no guarantees. But in that moment, it was enough. The fear, the uncertainty—they were still there, lurking in the shadows. But as Tobin and Christen held each other close, the love they shared shone brighter, chasing away the darkness, if only for tonight.

"Forever," Tobin whispered, her voice breaking as she clung to Christen.

"Forever," Christen echoed, sealing the promise with a kiss, hoping against hope that love might just be enough to keep the fear at bay.

And for now, in this moment, it was.
