I observed the door from top to bottom. It was a cold, wood door with numerous dark brown lines tracing down it. On the sides of the door, there were also two matching fancy windows to the one on the door. The shrubs on the sides of me had gained a light coat of frost.
The air around me was chilly, and I watched a few tiny snowflakes dance around my face. I felt the hairs on my arms prick up in an attempt to keep me warm. I didn't mind the cold air, though. It helped distract me from what was happening in front of me.
I had just knocked on my boyfriend's door, and I was waiting for him to answer. There was no reason I should have been nervous, but yet that dreadful feeling was looming over me. I began gnawing the skin from my bottom lip in an attempt to brush the feeling away.
One thing led to another, and thoughts began to crawl all over my mind, drowning everything else out with them.
"He probably forgot all about you."...."You're just an annoyance to him. Just go home."
As I continued to stand there, those thoughts kept running in my mind. What if I was just an annoyance? My eyes shifted to the parked car behind me in the driveway. It wasn't too late...
As I was about to bail out, I heard the door in front of me swing open. I turned my gaze back to it to find Niall standing there with one of the most warm welcoming smiles I've ever seen. He had been wearing light beige jeans and a dotted navy blue sweater with designs going across the upper abdomen portion.
I don't know what it was behind his eyes, but in that moment, everything that I had been feeling earlier simply vanished.
"Sorry for making you stand out here so long. I had been grabbing a few things for the two of us. Come on in!" He backed up so I could get inside.
It was a lot warmer inside the house than it was outside. Both temperature and mood wise. As I was taking off my shoes, I saw a blonde labradoodle come up to me and greet me. I crouched down to pet her. "Hi there, Winnie. How are you?" She wagged her tail while sniffing my hand. After she was satisfied, she sat down and observed me with big round eyes. Niall shook his head. "I think Winnie likes you more than she does me."
I laughed. "I like her too, but unlike Winnie, I'll always have you as number one in my heart." I assured him with a teasing smile. I then swiftly went up to Niall and planted a kiss on his cheek.
Since it was a quick action, it took Niall slightly off guard. I caught a brief glimpse of a light blush creeping up on Niall's face.
He quickly shook his head to try and rid the redness from his face. I could see him smiling. "Okay, well, I'll go get something ready for the two of us, okay?" He then turned to Winnie. "And you, Winnie? Why don't you take Y/n to the living room." Winnie just tilted her head and looked up at Niall like he had just spoken another language.
He just playfully sighed and turned his attention back toward me. "If you settle down in the living room, I'll be there to join you shortly. I've got to grab a couple things from the kitchen first."
I saw him hurry off to the kitchen, leaving just Winnie and I. I looked down at her. "Alright, Winnie. You heard him. Let's go." With that, I started to make my way to the living room. Winnie followed me, not straying too far behind.
Once in the living room, I sat down on the couch and noticed that lying on the coffee table was an assortment of many different board games. There was Monopoly, Jenga, BattleShip, and a couple of others. Based on this, I could tell that this was going to be a fun night.
Winnie had run off somewhere in the house, leaving me alone in the living room waiting for Niall to come and join me like he said he would.
Fortunately, that didn't take very long. It wasn't even two minutes later that I saw Niall walking into the living room with two matching coffee mugs that I assumed contained hot chocolate due to the marshmallows floating on the top.
