Naruto felt good. He was confusingly feeling good. Walking alongside Sasuke like this, having him care for him, not being alone, plus seeing Sakura's face earlier was so refreshing.
As the boys walked through the village, Naruto felt himself becoming comfortable with the idea of being sick forever. This sickness brought Sasuke closer to him. Was it selfish of Naruto to wish to keep it this way?
Sasuke kept pace with Naruto toward the Hokage's building, noticing his pace has quickened a bit since their last visit. He felt content. Naruto needed him, he needed his help to feel better. He felt like he was becoming accepted, wanted, appreciated, things he'd never experienced before. Naruto made it clear that he understood Sasuke, he understood the way he is.
Sasuke stifled a smile as the boys arrived at Tsunade's office.
They entered and walked up the stairs. Sasuke noticed Naruto didn't have to take breaks every 10 steps this time. They approached the door to Tsunade, and knocked. She yelled for them to enter, and Naruto grabbed the door. Sasuke noticed that Naruto was able to open it this time, without assistance. Even Naruto looked shocked.
For some strange reason, Naruto didn't feel good anymore. Sasuke didn't feel content anymore. Ironically, with the concept of Naruto's condition bettering, both boys felt worse. Anxiety had taken hold.
"Ah! Naruto, Sasuke. To what do I owe this pleasure?" She questioned, jokingly. Naruto rolled his eyes.
"Hey, old lady. We're here about my illness. We uhh-," Naruto looked to Sasuke, to which Sasuke finished his sentence. "We think it might've worsened. He had heat flashes last night and-"
"Heat flashes??" Tsunade interrupted. The boys awkwardly nodded. "That's good!" She continued.
"What?! How is that good??" Naruto exclaimed. Tsunade marched to the blond and examined his face.
"This is good! The heat flashes means the sickness is leaving! Very interesting.. usually this kind of illness takes a bit longer to take its course, but..I suppose if.." Tsunade mumbled. She looked to the floor, before her face turned bright pink. "Just what exactly have you two been doing.?" She asked.
Naruto and Sasuke did not reply. They only stood perfectly still, and stopped breathing. Neither one of them wanted to answer the Hokage's question. Tsunade sighed.
"Well, WHATEVER it was, it was intimate and nurturing enough to speed up his recovery! I suspect he may just work through a couple smaller heat flashes tonight and be good as new in the morning!" She stated, cheerfully.
For Naruto, a wave of fear overtook him. If he was better, Sasuke wouldn't need to take care of him anymore. He had no reason to stick around, he'd never be able to be this close with him again. He'd be alone again, he'd wake up alone, he'd eat alone, and Sasuke would be gone. He felt overwhelming dread, in anticipation for the end of his sickness.
For Sasuke, this was the end of the world. After today, his services were no longer needed. Naruto wouldn't need someone to look after him, he didn't need Sasuke anymore. He didn't have an excuse to hold him, or nurse him. He'd lost his clearance to maximum security level: Naruto Uzumaki. He'd go back to being alone.
"Chin up, you two. Is this not good news...?" Tsunade asked, raising an eyebrow. Naruto opened his mouth to respond politely, but nothing came out.
"Yes, ma'am. I'm relieved that he'll be better," Sasuke replied. Naruto turned his head to Sasuke, and using all his strength, masked his disappointment and hurt behind a crooked smile and a nod. Sasuke's heart panged at the sight of Naruto's smile, at the thought of being better. Better off. Better off without Sasuke there.
The boys then become the tragic victims of something called: a miscommunication. Both believing the other is happy at the news of the sickness going away, leading to the unnecessary entanglement they had to fade away to nothing.
"Now, is that medicinal herb broth I smell? You got that from the pharmacy market, yes?" Tsunade asked, walking back to her desk. The boys both nodded. "Good! That will definitely help. Make sure to eat it all, Naruto. I need my number one idiot back in action, understand?" She spat.
"Whatever, grandma," Naruto scoffed. Tsunade then promptly threw her shoe at Naruto. Sasuke quickly caught it, and bowed. Naruto followed suit. Tsunade scoffed back as the young ninja turned to exit. The leaf village hokage shot the stack of papers on her desk countless dirty looks before the doors closed.
Naruto and Sasuke headed out of the building and back to the street. No words were exchanged as they battled themselves in their minds. Subconsciously, they walked around the village aimlessly. They acted as if they were enjoying their last walk together, as if they were now forbidden from being this close on normal terms.
Before they knew it, it was dusk. They found themselves back at Naruto's apartment. Silence gripped their voices as they scaled the stairs and entered Naruto's apartment.
Sasuke looked around the room. This would be his final night with Naruto. He wasn't needed anymore. Naruto didn't need his help anymore. None of it was real, it was the sickness that made Naruto latch to Sasuke the way he did. It was over now.
Naruto stared at the floor. This would be his final night with Sasuke. He wasn't sick anymore. He only put up with all of this to help Naruto. Sasuke, deep down, is a good person. He helped Naruto to get better, and that was all. None of it was real, it was just the sickness that made Sasuke care for Naruto the way he did. It was over now.
Never did the wellness of ones health put such despair in goodhearted people.
