Nancy knows that her actions are bordering on the reckless, but she can't help herself. Armed with a hairclip-a makeshift lock-picking tool-and a surge of adrenaline, her fingers tremble as she inserts the clip into the keyhole. She applies pressure, her mind racing with the significance of her actions.
What would she find inside? What secrets would be revealed?
Nancy's palms grow clammy with nervousness. It's as if Steve's damn locker is just as securely guarded as his mind.
Whispers sprout and glances jump at her. Yet she doesn't care for them. As long as they're not Steve, she doesn't mind. She grits her teeth and stomps her foot onto the ground.
I feel it this time, she tells herself, pushing closer. The lock clicks open. 'Got it!'
She holds the locker closed for a moment. Her hands are sweaty, and her heart races. It beats so intensely, she can hear it in her ears, and feel it shake her whole body to the core.
Here it is ... the secret, the thing I was trying so hard to find. It has to be here. It has to be. Here we go!
She gulps down, ready to unveil the truth, and coming closer to find out what's between her and Steve. Nancy yanks it open.
'What's this?' She widens her eyes. 'It's empty! It's goddamn empty!' she mumbles to herself. 'There's no way!'
She can't accept that it's empty. Her hands throw themselves inside it, slapping at the metal walls in disbelief. There's only metal and darkness. It's only filled up with her slaps, anger and disappointment.
'No!' She covers her mouth with a hand.
'How nice of you.' A voice comes from behind her.
Startled, Nancy bangs the top of her head against the locker. She whirls back to find Steve staring at her.
'You know, I was actually thinking of cleaning it,' he says. 'It's quite dusty in there.'
