Chapter 2: A New Beginning

* 4 years later *

The Oklahoma City skyline stretched out before Lena as she drove her beat-up sedan down I-35, her eyes scanning the horizon where the towering buildings met the endless blue sky. The city was a far cry from the quiet, dusty streets of Cedar Creek, where the tallest structure was the water tower, and the most excitement came from the annual county fair. But as the Oklahoma State Capitol came into view, its gleaming dome reflecting the late afternoon sun, Lena felt a surge of anticipation. This was her new beginning, the fresh start she'd been craving for years.

It had been four years since she'd packed up her life and left her hometown behind, four years spent buried in textbooks, weather models, and lab reports at Oklahoma University. Now, with a degree in meteorology clutched in her hands, she was finally ready to take on the world—or at least, take on the storms that had shaped her life.

SARC had been her dream since she was a teenager, a beacon of hope and purpose after the tornado that had torn her family apart. The Storm Analysis and Research Center wasn't just any research facility; it was world-renowned for its cutting-edge work on tornado prediction and early warning systems. To Lena, SARC represented a chance to make a difference, to turn the chaos that had once consumed her into something meaningful, and to make sure no one else had to deal with the trauma of losing someone to a tornado.

She took the exit for downtown and navigated through the bustling streets, her GPS guiding her to a small apartment complex on the edge of the city's Arts District. The building was older, with faded brick and iron fire escapes, but it had a certain charm. Plus, it was within walking distance of SARC, which was a major plus.

After parking in the small lot behind the building, Lena climbed the stairs to the third floor and found her new home. The apartment was modest—just a one-bedroom with a tiny kitchen, a cramped bathroom, and a living room that barely fit her hand-me-down sofa—but it was hers. She dropped her duffel bag on the floor and took a deep breath, letting the unfamiliar smells of the city wash over her. This was where it all began.

Over the next few days, Lena busied herself with unpacking and settling in. The process was slower than she'd anticipated, her belongings seeming to multiply as she tried to find a place for everything in the small space. But as she arranged her books on the rickety shelf in the living room and hung up the few pictures she had brought with her, the apartment started to feel like home.

Her first day at SARC arrived quickly, and as she stood in front of her closet that morning, Lena felt a flutter of nerves. She had spent so long preparing for this moment, yet now that it was here, she wasn't sure she was ready. What if she didn't measure up to the other researchers? What if she couldn't handle the pressure? Shaking her head to dispel the doubts, Lena reached for her favorite blouse—a simple, pale blue button-down that complemented her eyes—and paired it with black slacks. Professional, but not overly formal. She tied her hair back into a neat ponytail and took one last look in the mirror.

"You've got this," she whispered to herself, forcing a smile. "You belong here."

The drive to SARC was a short one, but every block brought Lena's nerves closer to the surface. She had studied every inch of this place from afar, devoured every article, every paper that had come out of its labs. And now, she was about to walk through its doors as a colleague, not just an eager student.

The parking lot was already half full when Lena arrived, and there was a mix of sedans, trucks, and a few well-worn SUVs that she had imagined belonged to veteran stormchasers. She parked at the far end, taking a moment to compose herself before heading inside.
