**Chapter Four**
April marked the start of tornado season, and with it came a wave of excitement and anticipation for Lena. After a year of hard work, she had earned her position as a lead researcher at SARC, and the responsibility of leading chases now rested on her shoulders. The role suited her well; Lena had always been driven, but this past year had sharpened her instincts, giving her a level of confidence she hadn't known before.
She had settled into her new life in Oklahoma City with surprising ease. The bustling city had become her home, the streets familiar, the people welcoming. Her work had become her passion, and she had even started to build a small circle of friends outside of the office. But her closest bond was still with Izzy, the woman who had guided her through the chaos of her first year. And then there was Sawyer.
Sawyer joined the team about six months ago, and from the start, Lena had been drawn to him. He was different from the other researchers—more focused on the humanitarian aspect of storm chasing. With a degree in nursing and a background in meteorology, Sawyer was always the first to lend a hand in the aftermath of a tornado, helping those who had lost everything. His calm, caring nature had a grounding effect on Lena, who often found herself caught up in the thrill of the chase.
Today marked the first chase of the season, and Lena was leading it. She had spent the morning pouring over data, watching as cells began to develop over a town two hours east of Oklahoma City. It looked promising, and she was eager to get out there and start the season with a solid round of data collection.
She grabbed her bag and walked out of her small apartment, where Izzy and Sawyer were waiting by the car. The sun was barely up, casting a soft golden light across the city. The air was crisp, holding the promise of storms to come.
"You ready for this?" Izzy asked as Lena approached.
"Born ready," Lena replied with a grin. She could feel the familiar rush of adrenaline already starting to build.
They piled into the SUV, with Lena taking the wheel. The drive east was mostly quiet, each of them lost in their thoughts as the scenery passed by. The sky was beginning to darken ahead, the first sign of the developing storms.
Sawyer was in the back seat, checking over his equipment. "Looks like we might have our hands full today," he said, more to himself than to anyone else.
Lena glanced in the rearview mirror, catching his eye. "That's the plan."
They arrived in the small town just as the storm clouds began to gather on the horizon. Before heading out to set up, they decided to stop for a quick breakfast at a diner on the edge of town. It was a small place, the kind of diner that hadn't changed in decades, with faded booths and a counter lined with stools.
The three of them took a seat by the window, and Lena ordered a strong coffee, her eyes flicking between the menu and the sky outside. The tension in the air was palpable, the calm before the storm.
"So, Lena," Sawyer said as they waited for their food, "you've been doing this for a while now. What's your strategy going into a new season?"
Lena smiled, appreciating the question. "Every season is different, but I always start by trusting the data. It's our best chance to get ahead of the storm. But there's a point where you have to trust your instincts, too. When you're out there, sometimes the data can only take you so far."
Izzy nodded in agreement. "It's a balance. The numbers get you close, but your gut gets you the rest of the way."
Their conversation was interrupted by the sound of the diner door opening. Lena looked up, her heart sinking slightly as she recognized the group that had just walked in. Dylan Armstrong and his team.
