30| Who is the stranger ?

I got Stacy ready for school quickly and in few minutes, we were in my car driving down to drop her off at school while I continued to work. On getting to the office, I had just few minutes to settle down before starting the first surgery of the day. I was going through some nice looking apartments when I received a text from mom. I exhaled as I stared hard at the message notification that read : Mom with a hart and a smiley face.

This was exactly why I didn't want to pick her call that previous night. I had no intention of picking any other calls or reading any of her texts. I was just trying to overlook what she had done. I would let Stacy talk to her after school but as far as I was concerned, I had nothing to discuss with her. My thoughts were interrupted by a brief knock at my door

"It's time to begin the surgery ma'am"

I put on my surgical head cover and dashed into the operating room to begin the surgery.

I was at the mall, trying to purchase some milk and few other things for the house. I had gone to the cinema with my brother and sister since I had not seen them since I returned. I got home before I realized that I still hadn't bought the milk mom asked me to buy so I turned back to go get them. As I walked towards the front desk to pay for the goods I bought, I received a call from an unknown number.

" Good afternoon, this is Nathan Hale, how may I help you ?"

" I'm Mrs White, from the Federal Military Medics hospital. "

" Oh !, good afternoon ma'am "

" Yeah, I was told you called the hospital's front desk some days ago "

" Yes ma'am,  "

" Good, I presume you're Nathan Hale from the cadet camp. You met my daughter, Emma there . "

" Yes ma'am. Unfortunately, we parted ways too suddenly and I had no way to reach her "

" I see, she has said quite a lot about you. I'll send you her mobile number so you can give her a call. "

" Thank you ma'am, but can I have her home address too ? I'd love to give her a surprise visit "

" Well, for now she's not living with us, she moved out recently to lodge at hotel. ... We have a little drama going on "

" Okay, can I get the name of the hotel? "

" No, I don't know what hotel she lodged at but I can give you her work address instead if you're okay with that "

" Definitely ma'am. Thank you very much "

" You're welcome "

I had just stepped out of the operating room for a bit. I had successfully completed the first major surgery of the day which took about four hours. I stepped out to get some fresh air and realized it was already twenty five minutes past Stacy's school closing time. I had another surgery, which was supposedly my last surgery for the day. Unfortunately the hospital where I was to perform this surgery was a forty minutes drive from my hospital. I couldn't leave to pick Stacy up myself so I called my driver to go pick her up from school and bring her to my hospital to wait for me. Of course it was very difficult, I would have asked him to take her home to grandma but I didn't want that, at least until I had recovered from the shock of what mom did. I had received about four calls from her and two from an unknown number.

" Miss White, doctor Gill from Lard hospital is on the line " my assistant said suddenly

" Tell him ... Tell him that the ... Ugh, nevermind I'll speak with him myself "

Yeah well, I had to rush down to Lard hospital immediately for the second surgery.

" When Stacy gets here, please make sure she stays in my office. Tell her that I'll be back to pick her up so we'll head home "

" Yes ma'am " After passing this information, I picked up my purse and keys and left.

Stacy sat on my swivel chair in my office, she had finished her homework and was desperate for an afternoon snack. She had gotten bored of playing games on her tablet for hours. She left briefly to see if doctor Bunny was around so he could get her some chocolate or ice cream. On getting there, he wasn't on seat. He seemed to have gone for a late snack. She sat in the hallway, bored , even though her phone was in her hand.

" Hey, that's my seat " she looked up at the owner of the voice. He was tall, built and very. handsome. His clean cut face made him look like someone in his early twenties.

" Sorry "

" It's okay, I'll seat in this one"

"Okay.  She said and kept staring up at him You're handsome " she finally said with a smile and sat down.

" Why, thank you cutie "

" You're welcome. Are you sick ? "

" Uh, no definitely not, why ? "

" Because you'll only come here when you need a surgery. .. perhaps, are you waiting for someone ? "

" Yeah I'm waiting for someone. You're a smart kid "

" Thank you, is the person having a surgery ? "

" No, I don't think so "

" Okay, you're lucky then "

" Are you waiting for someone who is undergoing surgery ? "

" No, I'm waiting for mommy, she went to perform a surgery at another hospital "

" I see, aren't you bored ? "

" I am and I ...."

" Stacy, doctor Bunny is back "

Hearing 'stacy'  immediately made me realize who the little girl was. I wasn't too surprised though, because she looked quite similar to the girl in the picture that Emma gave me back at the boot camp. I knew it was her but for confirmation sake, I asked her

" Hey kid, are you Stacy White ? '

" Yes I am "he lifted her  off the ground and said:

" Thank you.... For being Stacy "

She obviously didn't understand and she obviously didn't know why I carried her but she didn't object.
