" Mom, it's uncle Nathan" she said, running towards my desk with my phone in her hands.
" Thanks baby, I'll call him once we get into the car "
She had been with me at the office since I picked her up from school. Now, I was just going through the last patient's medical report. I let her have my phone since she wasn't doing anything.
" Mommy let's go c'mon "
She got really hyper whenever I told her to pack up and I was still doing one thing or the other. Now, she was hyper again so I had to give her my things to take to the car while I finished up. Finally, I was done and I was ready to go. As soon as I stepped into the car, she gave me my phone so I could call Nate before starting the car.
" Hey pumpkin, sorry I missed your call, I was trying to finish up at the office "
" It's okay, I just called to check in on you "
" Thank you, what have you been up to ? "
" Well, I got the napkins and beddings you said you wanted to get for the new house "
" Aww, you shouldn't have "
" Don't worry about it. Just go freshen up and get some rest, I'll go back to the apartment today and see how things are going okay ? "
" Thanks Nate, y you're the best "
" I know. "
" Can I talk to him ? " Stacy said with a smile, she had gotten really fond of him and I liked it. I still had fears, as a result of what happened with Eric but ... I gave her the phone to talk to him.
" Hey uncle Nathan "
" How's my little flower doing ? "
I could see the happiness written all over her. I couldn't hear what he was saying, but I could tell he called her puppy or little flower. I still had no idea how he started calling her that, but she loved it and that was all that mattered.
" I'm fine , how about you ? "
" I'm okay, thank you "
" Will you come see me tomorrow ? We have our ballet presentation at school tomorrow ? "
At that point, I was thankful she spoke to him . Even I had totally forgotten about her baller presentation. I knew she had a presentation in school but I didn't know what day it was
" I won't miss it for the world "
" Thank you "
" It's my pleasure. Don't bug mommy tonight okay ? "
" Okay, goodnight "
I had to make out time somehow to attend her ballet presentation. I sighed and started the car .
------------------------------------------------------------------------
The presentation was to start by 6:00 pm but I had a surgery by 5:00 pm and I knew I wouldn't make it in time so just before I stepped into the operating room, I sent Nathan a text to let him know that I'd be late, but I won't miss the presentation.
It was not that much of a surgery though but it was one that needed extreme care. About an hour of cutting and cleaning later, we were right about done. The surgery was a skin grafting surgery on a patient who had sustained minor burns during the course of an explosion at work. I checked the time and knew it was time to leave. The surgery was done, so I had people in charge of monitoring his recovery. In less than thirty minutes, I was off and on the road, driving down to Stacy's school. Nathan had texted me that I shouldn't drive under pressure to avoid accident. He said they were still busy with formalities and had not yet started the presentations at all. This put my mind at rest but I drove as quickly and carefully as I could. True to his words, by the time I got there, it wasn't Stacy's turn yet. He smiled when I sat next to him.
" I'm glad you got here safe "
" Yeah, thanks to your reassuring words "
" Sorry, have you had anything to eat ? You look really tired " he whispered
" That's the joy of being a single mom " I whispered back with a smile.
Of course it wasn't something to smile about but I had gotten used to it so it didn't bother me anymore.... Or so I thought.
" Her grandma is here with Garrett, I bet that's why she's been calm "
" Really ? Aww, I didn't know mom would make it "
We kept whispering to each other because the hall was quiet. It was dark, filled with friends and family members of the children presenting and the teachers as well. The major source of sound were the rhythms to which the ballerinas danced to. And the lights were only on the stage, it was a beautiful event to behold and it was colourful, like the ones one could see on TV. When it Stacy's turn, we put an end to our whispering and paid attention to every move. At some point, I started to tear up. I still don't know what it is about ballet but it speaks to the soul. It wasn't just the song or the lights, it was a lot more than that. I enjoyed every bit of that presentation.
After the presentation, I looked for my little pumpkin and gave her a hug and a thousand kisses. Mom did the same, and Garrett and Nathan enjoyed the moment. While I and mom were all over Stacy, they did some bonding as we all walked towards our various cars. I stopped for a moment to see Stacy's teacher before heading out. It was odd how we were all related, but we came in our individual cars. I realized it was due to the different times of our arrival. Stacy got gifts from each of us before we left the school and drove back to the hotel.
That was the advantage of being everyone's favorite. She wasn't just the last born of the family, she was a different person to everyone. A daughter to me, a grand daughter to mom, a niece to Garrett and a.... Little flower to Nate
