Karl

My knee bounced in the back of the seat. I was restless and just wanted to be home. I just kept bouncing off my legs in anticipation.

"Sir, we are almost there," Eric told me from the front and I looked out the car. the familiar scenery of the house came into view. Amelia was all alone with Joel and I was afraid. There was this deep fear inside me that Amelia would run far away from me knowing my past and what I had done. She might think differently about me if she came to know how much darkness resided in me.

I breathed out a sigh not trying to think about that past. The past was the past. It was meant to stay buried. There was no point in thinking about it. Things have happened and nothing could be changed now. However, I wanted to be the one to tell her about it.

Why the hell had Joel gone there? I was mad at him. He could easily slip out anything about my past life, about my last marriage and how it ended. Amelia and I had just started a relationship, there were so many things she needed to know about me that I didn't want her to.

"We are here," Eric told me from the front,  drawing me out of my thoughts. I hadn't even noticed that the car had come to a halt. I was quick on my feet getting out of the car. I walked towards the house. Though we lived in a gated community a locked door was a need. Pressing my finger on the biometric the lock clicked open and I just walked into the house with fear in my heart.

"You should have looked at us back then," Joel laughed out followed by the sound of Amelia's laughter.

"We both were inseparable. Always getting into trouble and god I loved my life back in college," he added as I walked towards the living room. Amelia's eyes found mine as I entered the room. She gave me a warm smile dressed in a cream t-shirt and grey pants. I felt relieved seeing the smile on her lips. She was here and that eased my anxiety.

"Where did you go to college?" Joel asked Amelia making her go still. She looked at me before her eyes turned away. I could see through her eyes that she felt embarrassed.

"I don't remember," she speaks in a tone which is barely a whisper. The room grew silent.

"Here you are," Joel stood up drawing my attention towards him. He too sensed the

"God I know I'm not as beautiful as Amelia but you didn't need to give me that kind of expression like I'm an enemy. I'm the friend you know," I almost rolled my eyes at his words but the sweet sound of Amelia's laughter stopped me. My eyes moved towards her and I could see on her face that she was happy.

"See, how fast his expression changes when it comes to you and me. I'm so hurt, Karl. My heart breaks," Joel made a mocking hurt face with a hand over his hand.

"You need to stop or else Karl will get you going," Amelia said jokingly with a smile on her face. "I will let you both talk and get back to my work," she added standing up ready to walk away.

"Karl, do you need coffee?" she asked. It felt so homey right in that moment, as she asked me that. It was more about the tone she asked me in that made me feel important. It made me feel things that I haven't.

"You don't need to worry about that," Joel said. "I make a very nice coffee," he added drawing Amelia's attention towards him who looked at him skeptically. "I don't mean that your coffee was not good. The one you made was great, but we would require something better. Something a bit stronger," he winked at her smiling but Amelia just shook her head before her eyes found mine. She just gave a small smile.

"I will get going," she walked towards me with our eyes on each other.

"I'm in the studio if you need me," she added as she stopped beside me before on her way to the studio.
