The day started off as normal. You were enjoying your breakfast in the great hall when a second year Gryffindor stopped in front of you from the other side of the table. You looked up at him expectantly whilst taking a sip of pumpkin juice.
"McGonagall's looking for you" he said timidly. You couldn't help but smirk as you put down your goblet.
"Is she now?" you nodded and stood up confidently. "I think I know what this is about" you said. "Thanks kid" you waved him off cockily before strutting down the hall toward McGonagall's office. It had been rumoured for a while now that you were to be the next Gryffindor Quidditch Captain. A post that, in your opinion, you most definitely earned.
You knocked on McGonagall's door and heard her call out "Come in". You walked into the room and went to speak, only to find that you'd nearly missed another student already standing in front of her.
"Sorry Professor. If you're busy I can come back" you told her, realising the student was James Potter as you spoke.
"No need, (Y/l/n), I need to speak to the both of you about this" she replied. "If you would please shut the door"
You did as asked and stepped into the room to stand in front of McGonagall, making sure to leave some space between you and James. The pair of you didn't always get along which was only accentuated recently by the fact that you both really wanted the position of Quidditch Captain.
"Now, I know there has been some anticipation for my verdict on the next Gryffindor Quidditch Captain" she began. You and James shared a look, and both became confused realising the other looked entirely confident.
What's he so happy about? I have this in the bag, you thought to yourself.
"And it is no secret that, as our two strongest players, the two of you have been the forerunners" she continued. "You have each displayed excellent skill and talent these past few years as well as the ability to be a leader" she paused for a moment, looking between you two. "Which is why I have come to the conclusion to elect you both as Co-Captains"
Having not heard an actual name, her decision didn't process in your head at first. James was clearly met with the same affliction as you both stared blank faced at your professor. After a moment the words finally seemed register and your lips slowly parted.
"I'm sorry did you just say Co-Captains?" you asked, trying to keep your voice from raising. James' head whipped to you and then back to McGonagall."Co-Captains? As in... sharing?" he asked, clearly just as repulsed by the idea as you were.
"I'm reassured to see you are both beginning to grapple with a concept as simple as sharing" McGonagall shot back. "Now, while there are no doubts about your skills on the pitch I have also seen you both directly disobey instructions during games. I believe this will be the best way to make sure that you stay on the same page and of course, lead Gryffindor to a victory"
You both instantly burst into argument, explaining all the reasons why this wouldn't work. McGonagall simply sipped her tea and placed it down until you both finished.
