There were a plethora of reasons why Severus Snape despised the new headquarters the Order had established. Number 12 Grimmauld place held many, in his opinion, unpalatable features.
For one, it was the place of hiding and residence for a one Sirius Black. A man he loathed most deeply.
He also found it difficult to ignore the screaming portrait that would shout obscenities at him, should he accidentally make a sound upon entering the house.
The building now also held several of his least favourite students. And while he rarely caught glimpses of them, the sheer knowledge of their presence alone was enough to repulse him.
But then, there was the most critical reason of them all. The one that made him question whether he could continue to walk through that door before each meeting. (Y/n) Lupin. Wife of Remus Lupin.
The first time he saw you again was at the first Order meeting. He was so caught up in the current events he had completely neglected the knowledge that you would also be in attendance.
Because of course you would be in attendance. Not only were you married to another member but you were the sister of Sirius himself. And by Severus' observations you now seemed to have shouldered an unspoken role of acting as a maternal figure to the Potter boy.
Not that Severus was surprised. You'd always been soft hearted. It was perhaps one of the reasons you broke up in the end.
Yes. You, (Y/n) Lupin, were his ex. An important one too. He had every intention to marry you after all. But obviously that never happened. Life got in the way and in Severus' short absence Remus won over your heart in the end.
Something Severus was sourly reminded of as he accidentally arrived early to an Order meeting. "What do you mean it's in 30 minutes?" he sneered at Sirius who he assumed was having him on. But the convict simply grinned back at him.
"Well, I got the time wrong see. I guess it'd be alright if you stuck around for a bit beforehand. Now if you'll excuse me, I've got to see an elf about a hippogriff" and with that he trotted on out of the basement and up the stairs out of sight. Severus resorted to taking out a book that looked at least mildly interesting and sat at the table.
It was then he heard voices coming from the next room. He was unable to hear the words being spoken at first but could certainly make out intermittent giggling. He eventually looked up to a sight he wished not to see.
There you were in the next room. As radiant as ever. Age had become you like a fine wine. It was clear that in spite of the years of stress and loss, you had never lost your youthful demeanour.
He, on the other hand, looked a little worse for wear. Something Severus took a spiteful pride in. He was greying and his face was becoming worn. But he looked happy. It soon became apparent why.
He wrapped his arms around your smaller frame and whispered something that made you giggle again. You nodded and leaned up, you pressed your lips to his in what was clearly a quiet intimate moment. Severus wouldn't have wanted to catch anyone in that moment but least of all this particular couple. It served as a cruel reminder of what could have been.
