You'd always heard it being said but you wished you didn't have to truly understand it like this.
You don't know what you have until it's gone.
You practically lost everything that Halloween night. Well, almost everything.
You had grown up with James, the pair of you being friends from day dot. You'd never considered him anything less than family.
Your friendship with Lily wasn't instant, but when it finally happened, it developed fast and ultimately became unbreakable. She ended up just as much family to you as James was.
Their son, Harry, was your godson and you absolutely doted on him. It was common knowledge that you would do anything for that boy. That boy who was still very much alive but denied to you for reasons unexplained.
Your kindness toward Peter knew no bounds. It was never born from pity either, but rather pure fondness for him despite what others often said about his shortcomings.
And then there was Sirius. You had hit it off with him instantly alongside James. Your friendship with him had been full of nothing but laughter, with a dash of protective habits.
To lose it all in one night was nothing short of unbearable. So how could you bear it? There was but one answer.
Remus Lupin.

You sipped your drink from your mug as you gazed out of the window absentmindedly. Today was a quiet day. Two weeks since the funeral and you found some days were worse than others. But today was just quiet.
You heard the front door open but continued in your gaze. The visitor gently closed the door and made his way toward you, placing a kiss to your temple with a mumbled "Good morning" before busying himself around the kitchen, putting away things from the bags he'd brought in.
It had become routine for you and Remus now. To spend the entire day together. Some days you would talk, trying to work through things and openly share the grieving process. And other days you would simply have each other's company. The constant in it all was that you were rarely apart from each other.
The two of you had always been close. Mind, not as close as you had been to James or Sirius, but still very good friends.
When the dark times were at their worst, you didn't get to see much of him. You didn't see much of anyone besides Sirius who you lived with.
But now, after everything, you and Remus had formed this unspoken bond. And while you tried not to think about it, you had told yourself you wouldn't let Remus Lupin slip away like the others. You couldn't lose the last person you loved.
"It's quiet out there today" Remus commented as he put away the last of the food. "It looks like the celebrations may be settling down" he commented. You began to busy yourself around the kitchen now to make him a tea.
