Regulus didn't care for others. He didn't care what they thought. How they felt. It wasn't his duty to make people happy and comfortable so he wouldn't go out of his way to do so.
If someone laughed at one of his muttered jokes then fine. But he wouldn't make them for that specific reaction. If he could see a situation where he'd be of some use you'd better believe he'd turn and walk away from it. And if he's ever faced with someone visibly upset? Well you can be sure he'd silently put some distance between them and himself to avoid being vented to.
Because he really didn't care. He would live his life as he pleased and so could everyone else.
Except that there was one exception to that rule.
You.
You were known all over school for your bright smile and eternal enthusiasm. You made friends with everyone. Helped whoever you could whenever you could. And it was clear that you didn't do it for the praise. You did it just because you wanted to.
You were everything Regulus strived to be the opposite of and yet he'd always had a soft spot for you.
Whenever he made a joke that made you laugh he would find himself smirking pridefully. Whenever you seemed like you needed help he would go out of his way to solve the problem whilst brushing off any attempted thanks. And if anyone dared to make you even slightly frown... well I'll leave that part to your imagination.
It was always a shock to people to discover that the two of you were close friends. But to the pair of you it just made perfect sense. You brightened his world and he grounded yours.
And every now and then, on rarer occasions and when it was needed, those positions would switch.
Like today, where Regulus was slightly more chipper than usual. You noticed that he seemed to place his book on the table from beside you extra enthusiastically. To anyone else it was imperceptible. But you couldn't explain it. You just knew he was feeling happy about something by that one insignificant action.
"Good morning?" you asked with a confused smile. Usually he was slouched in his seat during any morning class but today he was upright as he turned his head to you.
"What?"
"Are you having a good morning?" you asked again, already mildly amused.
"Actually I am" he responded. If anyone else were to ask he'd sneer at them and tell them to mind their own business. But it was you. Of course he'd answer.
"Good" you grinned at him. "Are you going to share the good news with me?" you teased. Regulus smirked back at you before facing forward.
"No. I think I'll make you wait" he replied. You groaned and grabbed onto his arm as you leant into him.
"Please tell me" you requested. Upon receiving no response you began to gently shake him. "Reg" you whined.
"Alright" he gave in while pretending to be annoyed but as usual he enjoyed the feeling of having your attention on him. You let go of his arm and waited for his answer. Ever the private person, he looked around to make sure no one was listening before leaning toward you. "My parents sent my birthday present early"
