Cole was out for the morning. Looking for some fruits or vegetables to eat nearby. Even hunting down some chickens if he ever sees one; but he knows that he can't even catch one and cook it. Cole always think that they still have a family to return to, so he refuses. That's why they prefer on eating fishes on the river near the fields, although he's not very good at catching.
As Cole was walking downhill to go to reach the fields, he looked and checked the area first, ensuring that there's none of the King's men nearby. Cole was now getting near the tall grass of the flaxen field. As they walked, he noticed something new and odd that was added.
In the distance, he Cole saw a Scarecrow. It's hat and almost every is made of straw, except it has clothes on. Cole decided to go near the Scarecrow, going through the tall grasses first. When he stopped to where the Scarecrow was, he noticed it was not there at all at was more further to the left. Cole thought he was mistaken, so he went further left again this time. When he's sure he got to the place, it was gone again.Cole was left puzzled. Were his eyes playing tricks on him? He could've sworn he saw it right there.
Cole was about to leave, when he saw it again. It was a not that far from where he is, but it's also a bit of a distance. Cole stared at it, a part of him wants to go closer but he also hesitates. And just like any hare, curiosity gets to the best of them. They pushed themselves through all of the tall grasses, while keeping an eye at the Scarecrow. Cole got closer and closer, until he finally reached the Scarecrow. He looked around it, examining how it looks like.
A wind blew from Cole's direction, making their hair get all over their face. Cole closed his eyes by the sudden breeze and tried getting its hair away from his face. When the wind stopped, Cole turned to where the Scarecrow once stood, only to find it gone once again. They looked around, but it was gone. How was it gone when it was just beside him?? Then suddenly, a voice soft as a morning breeze whispered to Cole, which made Cole stopped.
"Beyond the cranny, come hither."
Is what it said. Cole pondered for a brief moment to figure out what it's talking about. Its head turned to a forest near him. Cole didn't even realized he came this far. He stood before the forest and he could hear it humming, like it was calling for them and wants Cole to go inside. Cole didn't even know why, but eventually he moved and went inside the forest. He doesn't know where he's going, but he sure wants to know where it will lead him.
As Cole walked in the forest, he found himself looking at trees different from the one's on the hills. Cole walked and walked, until he reached an odd and old looking tree that was bigger than the others. His fingers traced the cranny on the middle, 'this tree looks old' Cole thought. Then, the words from earlier echoed in his mind.
"Beyond the cranny, come hither"
Which means Cole isn't there yet. Cole moved his head to the side, and there he saw the Scarecrow from earlier, and it was... Moving? Yes, it was moving!
Cole immediately ran towards it before he'll lose track of it again. It was quite far a distance but Cole kept on running forward. Cole passed through branches and vines. They swept a bunch of vines in his way and there he finally found it..
"Woah... "
Cole was astonished at what he was seeing in front of him. The place looked so magical...Cole stood there, still frozen in daze. He looked at the Scarecrow who was dancing freely to the wind and birds around, while being surrounded by yarrows. As if feeling the presence of another, the Scarecrow stopped its dancing and turned to Cole.
Cole continued to admire the Scarecrow, which surprisingly, moved. They didn't even realized that the Scarecrow now stood on front of them.
"Hello"
"Gah!!" Cole fell to the ground in, startled.
"Oops, sorry I scared you." The Scarecrow held out its hand which Cole took it and was pulled up.
"Y-you.. Can move!? A Scarecrow??"
The Scarecrow's lips turned upward. Its fingers touched its lips, gesturing a 'hush'. The Scarecrow then slowly moved aside, showing Cole a beautiful hidden place in the forest. Cole was amazed once again. He stepped in and looked around the place. The grass, green as it could be. The sunlight hitting the spot perfectly. Cole was busy describing the surroundings that he was interrupted by the sound of strings strumming. It caught Cole's attention and turned to the Scarecrow who was holding an instrument in hand.
"Sit down, Cole." The Scarecrow motioned its hands to a spot where Cole can sit.
"You know my name?" Cole asked
"Yes, I do. But don't fret as you'll figure out the answers to your questions and satisfy your curiosity later." It strummed it's instrument. "Call me, The Storyteller."
"Okay.."
The Storyteller smiled and plucked the strings gently. "Now, I am here to tell you a story. Cole, listen carefully."
