gracie is on cloud nine. she submitted her edits for the upcoming smosh games video before the deadline, made a grocery and to-do list, and brainstormed some video and stream ideas all before noon. she smiles to herself as she logs off and packs up her things. as a workaholic, she hasn't felt this gleeful in a long time. absolutely nothing can her bring down.
"hey sister! is it lunch time yet?" amanda saunters towards her desk.
gracie is leaving work early today to meet jamie for lunch as a welcome to california. he flew in to visit her for the weekend since she won't be seeing him for her birthday next week.
why has everything been so lunch-centric lately?
"you bet," she grins. "he's supposed to meet me outside and then we're going to that mexican place. i'm really excited, i just hope he likes it."
"babe, i've been dreaming about that place since we went last week. he will love it!" she places a reassuring hand on gracie's shoulder and squeezes lightly.
"is this his first time visiting you?" angela appears from the kitchen, screwing the lid back onto her freshly filled water bottle.
gracie slings her bag over her shoulder and leans against her desk. "yeah, i'm kinda nervous."
"that's totally normal. you love him, so you wanna impress him," angela states. gracie nods in response.
"you've been here for three months and he hasn't come to visit you until now?" in typical spencer fashion, he makes quite the entrance into the conversation, walking over to the girls and leaning next to gracie -- something that has become a habit of his in the past few weeks.
amanda playfully hits his arm. "spencer! come on, dude."
"what? we were all thinking it," he states matter-of-factly.
gracie feels the need to defend jamie. not for his sake, but for hers; she feels the need to justify her being with him, because it seems like other people are seeing what she doesn't want to see herself. that's never a good sign, she thinks.
"he's been really busy with work," at his part-time job, "and gas is pretty expensive nowadays," except for when he's going to his parents' mountain house in wyoming, "and he wanted to give me some time to settle in by myself," which is why he keeps accusing me of having fun without him.
spencer, seeing right through her attempt at justification, quickly shakes his head. "i was just joshing, girl. have so much fun, see you monday for the fortnite stream." words uttered only at smosh. he holds up his hand for a high five, which gracie returns, and he saunters away. amanda and angela follow close behind and laugh at him, to which he replies, "no, trust me, it's our thing! she gets it, i swear!"
gracie, feeling at peace after talking to her friends, heads for the door where she sees jamie standing outside. her heart flutters and she ignores it. "jamie!" she grins as she steps through the door to the busy strip. it's a hot day, but the breeze is inviting.
