spencer gets in the office early on monday to work on some edits before the fortnite stream. he is excited to have a captive audience of women today in amanda, angela, and gracie. especially gracie, though he would never admit it.

it's not that he likes her or anything, he's just excited that there's a fresh face livening up the smosh cinematic universe. he can also sympathize with her as an editor-turned-cast member. the cherry on top is that she also plays along with all of his jokes, so he knows shooting with her is gonna be fun.

even if he did like her, which he doesn't, she's committed to some dude in new mexico. some dude who couldn't even be bothered to visit her until she had already lived here for three months, but that's neither here nor there. spencer is certain that she had a lovely weekend with him.

however, he is less certain when he sees her walk through the door.

remnants of a black eye frame her delicate cheek, where the tail end of a cut peeks over the edge of a small bandage. her thin wrist appears slightly scratched as well. his heart drops into his stomach when he catches her eye. he doesn't want to make any assumptions, as they are rarely correct, so he tries his best to suppress the funny feeling in his throat.

"hey spence!" she meanders over to his desk and peers over his shoulder at the editing he's doing, nodding with raised eyebrows. she swirls an iced coffee in her hand, condensation forming on the outside of the cup. "looking good, bud."

bud. he's not sure when she adopted this pet name for him, but he finds it endearing.

"thanks, bud." he quickly smiles up at her, returning the platonic nickname and setting an imaginary boundary in his mind. he doesn't want to cross any lines with her -- not that he's worried about doing so, because he wouldn't, and he doesn't want to anyway, because he doesn't like her. just to be clear. "are you okay? your face is a little, uh..." he gestures to his own, trying to explain without offending her.

"yeah, i know. it's a funny story, but i'm totally fine." she doesn't seem eager to talk about it, so he doesn't push it. however, he does inquire.

"how was your weekend with jamie?"

okay, maybe he shouldn't have asked that question. he's not usually one to stir the pot or pry for information, but he can't shake the feeling that something is off. though, even if he wasn't suspicious, he probably would've asked anyway. he wants to know how her weekend was, because that's what friends do.

her mouth briefly thins to a line before curving upward. "it was nice, thanks for asking!" changing the subject, she adds, "i'm excited for this fortnite stream today. ready to learn from the master," she jokes, nudging him with her elbow and, admittedly, making his heart flutter.

"hey besties!" amanda and angela say in unison, making their presence known as they enter the office and approach spencer's desk. always with a bit, spencer thinks.
