Naruko stared at her reflection in the mirror, her mind racing with anxiety and determination. Her parents had announced her engagement to Itachi Uchiha, the heir to the powerful Uchiha Corporation, and it was clear this union was more about business than love.
The merger of the Namikaze and Uchiha corporations would create a business empire unmatched in influence and wealth. But Naruko had heard the rumors about Itachi. Whispers of a cold, unfeeling man who treated women as mere objects, leaving a trail of broken hearts and shattered dreams. The idea of marrying such a man filled her with dread. "No way in fucking hell am I letting myself be tied down to such a man" she thinks determinedly.
There was only one way out of this mess: she needed to make Itachi despise her so much that he would call off the engagement himself. If she could convince him she was utterly unsuitable as a wife, maybe, just maybe--she could escape this arranged marriage and preserve some semblance of her freedom.
And so she began planning out her many different ways to make him call off the wedding.
Her first opportunity came when their parents arranged a dinner date, a formal introduction for the future bride and groom.
Naruko had planned every detail meticulously, determined to be as off-putting as possible. When she arrived at the luxurious restaurant, she was taken aback by how handsome Itachi was—tall, with sharp features, and an aura of cold elegance that was both intimidating and captivating. For a moment, she was struck silent, feeling an unexpected flutter in her chest. But she quickly shook it off, remembering her mission.
"Don't be fooled by his good looks, remember what others say about him? You'll only end up hurt if you end up tied down to him" she reminded herself.
As they sat down to dinner, Naruko ordered the greasiest, messiest foods on the menu. "First step, eat like a slob and talk like an idiot"
When her plate arrived, she dove in with gusto, smearing sauce across her face and making exaggerated chewing noises. She punctuated her meal with nonsensical facts, like how a duck’s quack doesn’t echo and how she could supposedly taste colors. She watched Itachi out of the corner of her eye, hoping to see a look of disgust or at least irritation
But instead, Itachi remained perfectly composed, watching her with an amused glint in his eyes. He didn’t flinch when she slurped her soup loudly or when she 'accidentally' spilled some on the tablecloth. He merely dabbed his mouth with his napkin and continued their conversation as if nothing was amiss.
"Come on!" She groaned wanting to face smack herself.
The next step was to show up to work late and dirty at the Uchiha Corporation, where she had been given a temporary position as a way to familiarize herself with the family business. She arrived disheveled, her clothes wrinkled with a coffee stain, her shoes mismatched, and her hair a tangled mess. She was deliberately clumsy, knocking over stacks of papers and bumping into furniture. Itachi, who was already in his office, looked up when she entered and raised an eyebrow at her appearance.
"Good morning Naruko" he said smoothly, as if her tardiness and disarray were of no consequence. "You look… comfortable" he said this with amusement.
Naruko bit back a grimace. She was sure this would have made him lose interest in her, but once again, Itachi seemed unaffected.
Her final attempt came during a business party, an event filled with the elite of society. She spotted her fiancé speaking with some important guests, and she sauntered over with a determined smile. "Itachi!" she called sweetly, "I've got a magic trick to show you!"
Itachi turned to her, his expression mildly curious. "A magic trick?"
"Yep! I can make your suit and my dress change color.” With that, she grabbed a glass of red wine from a passing waiter and, before anyone could stop her, splashed it onto her dress and Itachi's pristine suit.
Gasps filled the room, and several guests stared at her in shock. Naruko's mother face palmed at what she had done, but Itachi only chuckled softly. "Impressive" he said, looking down at the spreading stain on his suit. "What a good trick, you DID in fact changed the color of my suit" he smirked at her.
Her heart sank. No matter what she did, Itachi seemed impervious to her attempts to push him away. Days passed, and her antics continued, each more outrageous than the last. But Itachi remained calm, collected, and strangely intrigued by her behavior.
"What is wrong with him?!" She thought as she combed her hair anxiously as she paced her bed room, still coming up with plans to make him call off the wedding. "What does it have to take to make him hate me?!"
A week before the wedding, the Uchiha invited Naruko to meet him in his office. She arrived, nervous and expecting a stern lecture or perhaps even the long-awaited cancellation of their engagement. Instead, he greeted her with an amused smile.
"I must say, Naruko, you’ve been quite entertaining these past few weeks" he began, leaning back in his chair. "I know what you’re trying to do"
Naruko's eyes widened in surprise. "You..you do?"
"Obviously" Itachi said, his gaze never leaving hers. "You've been trying to make me call off the engagement. You’ve gone to great lengths to convince me that you’re not the right woman for me" He chuckled softly. "But what you don't realize is that I’ve found you more and more fascinating with each stunt you've pulled"
Her face flushed with embarrassment. "But… why? I've been trying to get you to hate me"
His smile softened, a rare sight that made her heart skip a beat. "Because you’re unlike any woman I have ever met. You are bold, creative, and unafraid to be yourself. I fell for you on our first date, and each time you tried to escape, I only became more convinced that you're the one I want to marry"
Naruko's mind raced, trying to process his words. "B-but… the rumors about you… I heard you were cold and cruel"
He laughed, the sound warm and genuine. "Rumors have a way of taking on a life of their own. I won't deny that I can be ruthless in business, but that doesn't mean I am heartless. If anything, I admire your courage for trying to stand up to me"
Naruko blushed deeply, feeling foolish for having judged him so quickly. "I… I didn’t know"
"Well" Itachi said, standing up and walking over to her, "Now you do. And we still have time to get to know each other better before the wedding. If, after that, you still don’t want to marry me, I’ll respect your wishes"
Naruko looked up at him, seeing a side of Itachi that the rumors had never hinted at. Perhaps he wasn’t the monster she had imagined. Perhaps there was more to him than she had ever given him credit for. And as they talked more, sharing stories and opinions, Naruko began to see that maybe, just maybe, she wouldn’t mind marrying Itachi after all.
